Trees inside tonight

Good move. I put everything back in the mulch and covered them and then watered.

Fortunately all mine fit in the garage but it only got down to 37 here and is only expected to hit 47 tonight so you must have won the lottery.

Yeah. I feel you. Almost all my deciduous and smaller containers are in my heated cold frame or in the garage. 75% of them have leafed out already from the ridiculously warm weather.

Some of the trees living inside tonight as temps get down to mid 20's. Hopefully last time I'll have to do this, but I doubt it.

Hey, Rock, are you only doing this for trees that have broken dormancy? I’m also expecting 20F tonight, but most of my trees are still buried in mulch and dormant. I have the trees that have pushed buds in the garage, but I left the rest buried in the mulch they’ve been in all winter.

If the buds are not popping, you just let it be.
If you’re concerned, you can always throw a sheet or burlap over it.

I thought of you today when it dawned on me temps would hit 30 or below tonight here in VA.

Yes. Trees that have leaf buds are left outside under mulch. There is no reason to bring trees that have no leaves inside as they retain their dormancy protections until leaf break.

Those trees wish they were inside… it was 15 F yesterday morning. They were pulled out from their overwintering place underneath the eaves n my patio three weeks ago when the temperatures were consistently in the 50s, 60s, and even 70s for more than a week. They’ve been on the ground for almost 2 weeks now😬. I think they’ll be back up on the benches at the end of this coming weekend🙏. I also have all of my repotted maples, and my smaller conifers in my cold room which is no longer cold… The conifers are under lights now and I will be moving them outside sooner than later. I’m willing to do the two-step for them if needed. For what it’s worth, I have Japanese maples and trident maples, still under cover and mulched on the patio, with leaf edges visible from swelling buds… They’re just gonna have to stay there😎.
