I haven't grown a mugo yet but I'll try it.
I found a nice piece with good trunk a lot of branches, which however don't cause much swelling. The base is ok. It's twin trunk but the second trunk is pretty bad with a large whorl at the end.

The tree grew a bit too much and many inner needles died, so this will make it a lot more difficult, but there are still some good buds inside.
I cut about 1/3 of the roots and 1/2 of the folige. I then bent all the long branches out and down, so the inside is now completely exposed. I should see some budding before fall. Most of the existing branches are useless, they will have to be regrown mostly.

I just learned that the auxin flow is affected by gravity so bending the branches down could help backbudding. Also the tree didn't even notice the repot, the inner shoots want to grow again, and the larger ones are also enongating their buds.
