This is a Tamarack I collected 2 years ago. As can be seen it has led a tough life. Looks like it was run over at one time and maybe on fire too. We have a lot of fires here.
As I always do, when I got it home I washed the rest of the swamp muck off of the roots then put it in a collander. Last spring I cut it back again and repotted it into this mice training pot.
This year it will get repotted, cut back again and it's first wire job. Of course that is after it unthaws. This and one other tamarack are the only trees of mine that aren'tfrozen to the ground still.
12 degrees here this morning. But maybe see some 40's or maybe even 50 degrees next week!

I like these.

I really can't believe it's still 12 up there.

And some snow to boot. The kiddies are always dressed in their finest winter wear for Easter egg hunts.
I've a few more Tamaracks to post as they thaw loose from the ground.
I've got my eye on a few nice ones to collect. I have a couple friends that I met on here from Michigan that are making the trek to go collect some also. They grow literally like grass in spots. I'll be getting whole forest plantings in a large shovel full. It's like the cones hit the ground then blow up. Putting the seeds in a small area.

So in curiosity, for a tree the shape you have there with a bend, where would you cut the next time? For best results.

That leader that is growing up on the left coming off the top will get cut back to the second branch up. The fatter branch lower on the right gets cut Bach to 2 buds. Tha other branches that I keep are thin so I let them run this year to thicken up.

Interesting thanks, I am toying with the idea never tried yet though seems the best way, my fear is I will plant, leave to grow all them years, then chop it and kill it and it never will grow again hahaha! o_O

With these and all conifers never cut lower than a bud,a branch or green needles. With decidious trees to can hack them off just about anywhere and they will grow back.
Big cuts are hard to do at first. Kind of scary I agree. Once you do it a couple times and come to realize it makes the tree better faster it gets easier.

It's only a tree! Don't fear it!

You have plenty of time to learn everything you need to know while it's growing out! Plant em!
