I’m 9b (Sonoma County, CA) and I’m hoping to start a few, final air layers on some JM’s. Am I getting too late in the year to successfully complete an airlayer before winter? If so, should I wait until later next spring or if I begin a few now and see root development by October would I be better served removing from the tree in late October and planting in the ground or leaving the layer attached over the winter with hopes of removing in late spring?
Finally diameter of layers would be slightly larger than a pencil.
Thank you!

Just separated a layer which took under 6 weeks.
I would count on 8 weeks from now. Which would put you in late september. If that is still 4+ weeks from frost you should be OK. Else, you can leave it on over winter. Done that plenty of time in a slightly cooler climate.
