Thoughts on Today's Bonsai Mirai Tree Sale?

Mirai recently did a stream on this nursery stock Linden, I'm not subbed anymore but I'm sure it was a fun watch

Thanks for the share, it's looking great!
Was this pic before or after the refinement?

That photo was from the end of the stream.

Yes it is a great tree! My buddy from the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society, Adam Johnson (who is a professional-level practitioner), owns the tree and has been doing fantastic work on it for the past few years, as Ryan mentioned in the stream.

I saw the first stream Mirai did on this Field maple when I was a subscriber some time ago. About to sit down with my dinner and a cuppa tea, to watch this new update.
This is what its all about, WORKING ON YOUR TREES!

Just saw an update on the Linden, looks like it will be going up for auction

There are four trees coming up for auction this week at Mirai. This is the only deciduous. The “end of summer” sale:

It would be nice and interesting if a BNut member could show the auction results, like other auctions. Just out of curiosity. It ends saturday, the 6th september.

Not a big fan of that Douglas Fir. Doubt it would sell for anything near this price if it weren't for the Mirai label. Reminds me a little of a nursery stock conifer turned to bonsai. Slender trunk with little taper and large bends. But especially the nebari is not my taste. Probably gonna hit between 5k$ and 10k$, seems excessive.

The Spruce is the lowest at auction right now, but I quite like that gnarly base. Reminds me of conifers in nature.

I had the same feeling when I first saw it in my FB feed. Looks like it was plucked from the wild. The Juniper too is great. I like them with this wild look.
Probably the last we'll see of the Linden. Bar Mach5 i've never seen anyone on here purchase a deciduous tree from the Mirai auction.

Fwiw. That Doug fur is in a large Jan Culek container which probably runs $1000 $1500 all by itself. Not a huge fan the tree but it will appeal to some as it is pretty quirky and “looks like it was plucked from the wild.” That’s the appeal. Also if you can find one similar. Collected Doug firs tend to be pretty tame by comparison.

Agree there. Not my cup of tea either, but it will definitely appeal to the masses, even down to the exposed roots, somebody will love the roots.

Not my style either. The roots are anthropomorphic. The tree “walks” on them. There are big fans of such trees from the Ent crowd to the traditional Penjing people. This trident at the National Bonsai Museum is meant to be a dragon. This Doug fir has a similar vibe but it’s naturally created

The spruce is my least favorite…. The picture makes it look like raw material to me, I don’t see what he’s going for

The most difficult thing to me when gauging his work is that 99% of it looks like a first styling (which I believe it often is) and I don’t know what it’ll look like when it’s matured and developed into a more finished bonsai

That said there’s a latch at a nursery near me that I love and only recently learned Ryan had given it the initial styling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
