The Tree Thread

Nice to see more people jumping in.

Dorothy, here is a a hollywood juniper I would love to hear your feedback on (or better yet design idea if possible :D ).

Dario, you got a pic of the back of the Juniper? If not and you have to take one, capture the sides too. Have you trained a Torulosa before?

Here is a little serissa. It's not anything spectacular but I like it and am happy to try and contribute to a thread worth clicking on as opposed to the crap that has been posted lately.

Pardon the picture quality; I wanted to share in this thread. This is some twisted wire wrapped in what feels like straw. The leaves are paper mache. Got this as a Valentine's day gift from my special lady.

And NO, I'm not going to chop it back to the first branch to get better taper. :cool:View attachment 32066

Keeper :)

Aww! That is indeed a work of love! Very nicely done. Is she into bonsai too?

A couple of trees I'm working on:

Zelkova, Japanese Maple group

Uhh, nice work! What are the dimensions of the first tree. Would you share a pic of the group in the flat rectangular container?

I love ume! That's going to be a nice one! I wished I could grow ume and California Uniper(?) here. Did you collect the Juniper?

Great thread. I am enjoying it so much I feel some moral obligation to contribute. I am putting the birches up for a couple of reasons even though they are just basically seedlings. One is that you do not see many birches posted and the second is I have never seen any other this small (about ten inches) that have white trunks. I would be interested in other's experience in that regard.

This made me smile! It is quite lovely. Did you make the slab/container yourself?

The second is a white cedar which I post because it is so ubiquitous around here. First is as collected and the second was taken last year.

Can't grow that here either. Looking good, Gene Deci. I am enjoying the thread too. It is less intimidating for folks to casually post a tree. We need to have more fun with what we are doing, don't you think.

Gene,

I was never able to get any of the birches (paper silver or grey) to really live up to what I hoped were their potential. About the time the bark was whitening, the trees were dieing back in NH.

Tamarack and alder are trees that are worth your search IMO.

My new residence is just about too south for them :(

Ahhh! Taeda or Elliotii? Very nice tree. The wired lower branch died?

Nope...P ponderosa, I fear it's on its way out...this will be the make or break year, I think. That pic is a year old...that branch died two years ago.

This is a Rocky Mountain Juniper that doesn't mind the Southern climate as much as the pondy:)

Here are a couple of seedling that I dug from a neighbors yard (about 6" at the time) a few years ago. Still needs to develop some bark but I hope for these to represent a group of the tall lobolly pines that grow here in South Carolina... maybe 30-36" now...recently wired and repotted.

Very cool work, John. I love the natural look you work your compositions into ( and your great videos)!
Question about this three group planting: You can probably get the trunks to develop at different rates and create different sizes, if desired. That could mean to temporarily separate the trees, again, only if that's what one want's to do. Do you have any plans to change the calipers or do just live with it? If you are planning to change the trunks, how would you do it? I had a similar situation with a planting, separated it, and someone bought all three trees to plant them back together....hmm.(scratching emoticon)

Here is a tree that I hope to work on this year...(unless someone decided to take it off my hands:D) It is the largest in my collection at nearly 6' and it is potted in what I believe to be the largest mica drum pot available. I did carve the top of this tree 2 summers ago but have only been pruning for ramification since then.

I am serious about wanting to sell this one...it is very large and not shippable but I would be willing to talk about driving to meet up with someone in the Southeast if they were interested...send me a pm.

John

Great tree (virtually..). Again, I love the naturalness you are showing in your works! Splendid.

I cannot get over the buttonwood cascade that Dorothy posted at the beginning of this thread. Dorothy does your screenname come from that tree? Heres a ume that i just decided to begin training as a cascade
View attachment 32075

Cascades are one of my favorite styles and probably one of the most difficult ones to create. Not everything that hangs to one side (pardon me for the lack of a better term) automatically qualifies as cascade style. The way the tree comes out of the ground dictates the success in my view.
Now, there are yamadori cascades that work no matter the base trunk, only because they are so powerful in their entire appearance. They seem to be rather reminescent of a style than the particular style itself. Ahh, ramblings..

Nice ume. Looking like a rather long project? ;)

heres a pic of a California Juniper at the Huntington Library Collection in So. California being repotted by Mr. Neil.
some may know the other fellow in the background grinning. Note the pretty elaborate tie down with a small single drain hole pot. Tree was at least 4' and fairly rotted at the base.

Is this your tree? Awesome Juniper! What did Ryan do about the rotting process at the base of the tree, if anything? Thanks for posting this!

Here is a little guy or gal I got from wee tree. Not sure what direction I'm going yet. Entertained the idea of air layering to get 2 trees and or Anderson flat. Ideas?

What kind of tree is it? The virtual I posted earlier almost depicts the feeling of your tree. Here it is again together with another (required) pic..:)

Good idea Dorothy. Will you be at the Fort Myers meeting next weekend?

Not the best angle, but here's a "Hachi Gen" JBP i picked up from Brent last month.

Cool..here's another Hachi Gen (JBP corker cultivar) from Brent Walston; 4-5 years ago...some argue it's actually 2 trees...and if the graft doesn't take, it might be...
