The Shohin Tree Thread

Wow! I absolutely love this. Is it really shohin size!?

The quality of trees on this site has really been elevating these last few years! Keep up the good work everyone! Let's take it to new heights in 2025!!

It’s pushing it size wise. It won’t fit in a box stand while it’s in leaf for sure. About 10” from lip of the pot, the pots 7.5” wide.

So that one I did myself

This one I wired at a club event, where Suthin was giving a class - he shaped it. Again, I really think I should have this in a grow pot to get it to be more than a shaggy outline eventually, but I’m curious to see how they thicken in small pots.

Also included: Suthin’s willow leaf display at the last Nationals. A single species, tropical display is such a cool challenge of Japanese and American tradition by a Thai bonsai artist who may have cut his teeth on ficus.

Kinda talking out of my ass, but it’s what I’d like to believe. The show photos are from bonsaitonight.com - I’ve got quite a ways to go with mine!

This one is starting to fill in a bit

The one in the yellow pot self defoliated despite being under grow lights, warm, and humid but it has bright red buds so it’s ok but you can see the leaves on this one yellowing too

I’ve put them in a location with gentler light but still warm, I figure if they did this under a grow light they need some kind of break

A work in progress chojubai. I think I actually got this from Shannon Salyer when I went to Bjorn’s open house and drove out to his place as well. He has fantastic Shohin.

I put it in a three-tier contraption: 4” pot with pumice, 5-6” (I forget) pond basket with large grain a/p/l, and a terracotta grow pot with normal stuff

I removed the 4” portion at the end of last year and was happy to see chunky winding roots growing. In a year or two I’ll remove the pond basket and see what’s under there, then I’ll figure out what’s next.

I am looking forward to seeing what suckers throw from the roots - I think the goal is to eventually get rid of the “main trunk” and allow the dense thick roots to throw suckers that you use to make the tree. So you get a thick base with wildness growing from it.

Biggest concern is that I think I should have only cut of 1/2 of the 4” pot this year and let the bottom go a bit more feral before taking it off entirely.

This is sort of what I'm talking about but not quite

I mean the little dudes that look like a potato of roots with dense close ramification

It'll tell me where to go, might not end up where I thought

@badatusernames I'm doing the same. Small chojubai cutting that I grew in a small round pot for a season to get the roots to circle and form a round shape. This past spring I placed the circling root mass on top of a larger plastic pot and covered the roots with a cut down pot. Once I saw roots coming out the bottom of the bigger pot I started exposing the upper root mass, which then started to sucker.
