The Literati/Bunjin Thread

Different angles of my Crape Myrtle - 30 inches (about 75 centimeters) tall and 30+ years old. Leaves started popping out last week.

Not really sure if something like this counts as literati, but it's the closest I have and collected with literati in mind. Tall, lanky, sparse birch clump just under 40". Only pics I have are just after collection about a month ago. It has a long way to go.

It was a weird collection, a birch had fallen over and rooted just under the clump. There a was 5-6 foot trunk buried that this thing was still connected to.

My crepe myrtle has a lot of new growth, is taller, and now has blossoms. This by the way was a tree planted by my dad in 1992 in the backyard. It never thrived, probably poor soil. It was looking pretty bad so in 2020 I started fertilizing itWIN_20220629_15_50_00_Pro (2).jpg. A year later I dug it up and potted it. This is the best it has looked in a long time. And the first time I remember it ever having blossoms! Currently now 42 inches tall. After the blossoms I will cut it back some.

My 19 year old Wisteria has jumped up to 38 inches tall with a growth spurt this year.View attachment 444523

Both of these are absolutely beautiful! And not typical species for literati. I really like them!

Here’s a young Japanese Red Pine at the beginning of its literati journey:

Thank you very much. I can't wait to get them into nicer pots - something like the one your Red Pine is in!

A Mt. Hemlock literati collected by Anton Nijhuis at a very high altitude on Vancouver Is. He estimated it’s age at over 150 yrs. It is about 2.5 in. at the base and 30” tall.
Anton did some preliminary work on it before I purchased it last December. Second photo is with my wiring. Future plans are a nice pot, maybe a round drum style (ideas are welcome!) and some work highlighting the natural jin and shari.

Just a baby black pine I picked up in 2020, been messing with since. Left the lower foliage longer, just for vigor. I'm finally starting to clean up some branches, pull needles, think about its shape more seriously. I think the branches up at the crown should start cascading down and away - just an idea.

So I listed this Eastern Red Cedar a couple weeks ago but wasn't quite satisfied with it. So I made some tweeks with positioning and wiring, and a few snips (didn't want to cut off too much) DSCN9807 (2).JPGand I'm liking it more. I've been looking at a lot of penjing literati and been trying to imitate it. Hopefully a smaller pot next spring too. (It's currently in a flower pot!). It's 45 cm tall.
