I was trying to hold out until
actual spring to guide these smaller pumilia... but it was time, now..

Still sulking.. but "spring" has clearly begun in my "cool rooms"

A very different approach seems to be necessary for training the pumilia from a younger specimen for a few reasons.


We'll see what happens with these.

Ive seen big ones with amazing thick curly trunks, but in pot I think they are very slow to thick up as many vines

Awesome little ficus projects, i really like the root cuttings. I currently have 2 Gensing (I know ), and a benjamina. I also have quite a few cuttings of benjamina and a couple variegated benjamina and two green mounds rooting in water. The ficus root quite easily in water and in my experience have a 99.9% success rate that way.

Haha!! me too... he's only one more container away from being "pot-ready"..

I realized, recently.. that most of my "goals".. for specimens... end up being small... most falling into shohin or kifu sho.. and never, hypothetically, breaching over Chumono.

I have too many ficus, so many varieties I can't remember them all. This summer I will have to cull them.
Burt Davyi nana is IMO the best of all for smaller bonsai. It also has more spellings than any other ficus.
Its roots are outrageous and will quickly circle around any pot. At repotting time I cut the bottom half to two thirds of the roots off, put them in a shallow tray and harvest all the resultant new plants from the old roots. Just harvested some new ones yesterday.

Never tried root cuttings on mine. Will give that a shot.

I know a fella that'd either work out NON-live trades.. or pay shipping to save some that you are intending on culling..

But he's a little...weird. Kinda wild.... hard to ethnically "pinpoint"... and has one of those "crazy eyes".. where the lid is half open.. and the eye just kinda goes where it wants to, or stays fixed in place.... weird dude.

I HAD a really neat Benjamina root cutting, also... but it was directly under a birds' nest... and first got defoliated by "hot (N) waste"... then I WITNESSED those Damn Cow Birds "chuck" one of their sickly or extra young out of the nest.. and that little bird breathed his last breath, a few moments after the fall... IN that container... I figured it (my emotions surrounding this event) was the most "care and concern" he ever experienced.. so I buried him WITH the container and dying plant.

I made one root cutting from my Natal ficus the other day, its amazing how a plant from a cutting can form incredible thick roots in a couple of years
