Just came across this thread and I’m a year ahead of schedule unfortunately lol, no luck at my local hd this year but the year before I got this little dwarf Alberta spruce and it’s been a fun tree to watch progress. Here’s a few pics so far of its progress, it had a ton of branches and some reverse taper that I think I can correct with a little shari and gin and hopefully capture a cliffslide lightning struck little shohin spruce

Looks great! Did you let the tree recover between the second image (bare roots on rock) and the pruning/wiring in the third image? I can see backbudding. Maybe I don't need to be too conservative chopping back my Alberta spruces.

Thank you, yeah the tree responded well pushed out a lot growth that spring and I didn’t touch it all for the rest of the year, I was told they are super tough and almost hard to kill but don’t prune them in the summer wait until the buds have developed for next year and then it’s safe to prune

I was just looking at mine, and noticed it seems to be pushing a second flush. I pinched and cut back about a month ago. Not much to look at since its not in “bonsai mode”, but I’ll post an update when it gets repotted in the fall (I messed up the angle last spring, and don’t want another Christmas with it crooked)

Ive been lazy with mine, all I have done really is clean out the dead branches, and remove 1 of the spare apexes the tree had. But I will try and remember to snap a photo when I catch some daylight while I am at home
