The 2015 Spring Box Store Challenge Entries Thread

And I am back. Beginner. Same nursery as the last time (I never learn). Escallonia.

I'm entering in the Intermediate category. Picked up this Callistemon (Bottlebrush tree) from the same nursery that I purchased the Fall Box Store Challenge Juniper from. Purchased on 3/7/2015. It's going to be to tough but I love a challenge.

Ok, so I got back from the nursery... here is my entry for begginer category (since dec 2013).
It is an arrayán chileno or Luma Apiculata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luma_apiculata

It cost over 100x the allowed 50 bucks... I paid 5500!! confetti pesos... 9 bucks aprox :p

It took me so long to find it as stores in Chile barely cary anything over 2 gallon... And my entry will not be able to make as instant bonsai or anything similar. But it was a fun day! I bought a mugo pine and 2 cotoneaster too!

The only thing is I wont go way down on the top layer of the roots because it is full on summer down here... I hope not to kill it becuase of my timing.

Oops, ignore part of my comment on the other thread. It qualifies and you can begin working on it. 9 Bucks! You stole that one. Thanks Max!

OK,..so the escallonia did not inspire and turns out that the branches are extremely brittle. So. Third and final attempt. Still a beginner (all though if we learn from our mistakes I should be a friggin' expert in no time). Pyracantha. $8.98. Home Depot. 14MAR2015.

I was out of town yesterday so sorry for not replying sooner. It's a qualifying shrub so you're good to go.

The nurseries around here don't even have a schedule of when they might start receiving stuff.
Thanks for the update Vance. We're still a month and a half away till the deadline. Are they saying they won't have anything by then or they just don't know if they will? I'd like to see everyone have an opportunity to participate.

I got an azalea today I had never seen before: Kurume "Hershey Orange"?? I am interested to see what the blooms look like.. BUT, here is the issue- if I style within the next 14 days, I will have to remove pretty much every bloom on the tree! Does anyone care if I wait a little longer than the 14 day limit, just so I can see this guy in full "party gear", and give it a chance to calm down a bit after blooming before I attack it? Vin said he was cool with it, but wanted me to pose it to the group before I proceed. This is kind of extenuating circumstances I suppose... I am not gaining any advantage from waiting longer, just want to see the tree in full color! If nobody objects, then I guess I will take that as an OK- Vin said I should post a pic of it blooming to start the ticker on my 14 days.

I have a pic of the "nursery" on my phone if anybody really needs to see what Lowe's Looks like, I can post it when I get on my ipad again! I got another Satsuki while I was there too- a "Momo No Haru" variety with pink blooms... Can we enter more than one? I see where someone above me posted like 2-3 trees... I wasn't planning to enter the "Momo No Haru", it was just a Satsuki variety with tiny leaves I did not own yet!DSC00740.JPG DSC00737.JPG

I will be entering in the intermediate category. Here is my Duranta. Never heard of it before the contest but when I got home from the nursery I did some research and found they are often used in bonsai.

Vance might be able to make it in.
Me? Not so sure.
I have no problem with Eric waiting

Duranta is an evergreen and qualifies. It looks like some good material. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot.. I guess I am advanced category. If we are going simply off time in the hobby, I am certainly in that range. Don't feel very advanced sometimes and I kind of taught myself for most of the first 10 or so years I was doing Bonsai...

I purchased my entry today from Lowe's...English Boxwood...Beginner category...$19.99...3/18/15. This tree is going to be tough in some ways--interior branches galore:
