Tempted by topiary

So whalloping off a couple balls this time of year before winter storage should be a reasonable thing to do you figure?
Last year I bought a big Degroots spire, and cut off 90% of the foliage. Then this spring I barerooted it, and potted up with good substrates. It has been fine all summer.

I read "tempted" in that title again. Getting ILL thoughts.

Have you ever been tempted by a tree in the woods?
Or does it just happen?

Maybe tempting to take a very difficult collect, but temptation only presents itself after you learn of the danger, the bad.

Otherwise these things just happen.

Falling to temptation is never good.

I'm only ever tempted to buy shit I shouldn't.
Like that $300 S Fukien way back in the day.

I can ever remember a time I fell to temptation and enjoyed the results, being completely honest with myself.

I can say I'm happy with everytime I didn't fall to temptation.

That one trunk is wide, but it ends there for me.
I bet you could have taken all the time you've spent on these things already, and have tagged no less than 4 better trees in the woods.
You just happened to have been in town?

You don't belong there!

Hippy!

Huh?

Mark a tree, make a tree!

Get em while they're good.

Spend a lot or not.

A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush...

The last temptation of Christ.

The Temptations or The Four Tops. Doesn't matter they were both from Detroit. Motown. Rock City.

It’s when you resist the temptation and always wonder how it would have been that’s the kicker! There was this one time these two hot Asian girls from out of town tried to lure me back to their campground from a high school house party...... Ok, maybe that may have gone badly but I regretted not giving into that temptation for.. uh.. yeah, still😃.

Kinda late, but I was thinking airlayer the top , then the middle.............3 for the price of one.

It’s ok. I’ve been considering that since I first saw the tree. Was near 50/50 for and against layering for various reasons. Sliding it in and out of the truck easily is what tipped the scale in the end.

Looks like some serious nebari!

I’m quite excited to work with this. The base appears to me about 3x better and more impressive when viewed in person compared to when I look at the photos I’ve taken. CC624C04-B2D7-43B1-B324-C0500E2450A3.jpeg

I will revive the thread in spring and solicit some repotting advice from the various experienced Thuja owners here.

The basal flare looks really nice from what I can see in the picture. Branch selection should be interesting. It looks like there’s a lot going on inside that ball.
I don’t know anything about Thuja. Due to the fact that this was just hedged for a dense topiary, the inside is completely bare with the lack of light allowed in. Does Thuja bud back relatively easy? Something on level with Juniper maybe?

I hope that’s the case. Pretty sure that I have seen the Thuja guys here talk about new growth emerging out of old crotches.

If I were to assume the worst and that it will not backbud then at least there is foliage near the trunk down low all around the exterior so I figure it would still be possible to get a good result given enough time.

I'm oddly intrigued with this material.

Seeing Mach5's Thujas from Suthin and now this one give me reason to wonder if such a design CAN be possible with some time and a bit of elbow grease.

Typed that filed to the brim with my tai and liquor cabinet leftovers. Burppp.

Chainsaw styled next spring? Upper twenties tall? Maybe taller with some gnarly carved tenjin and foliage giving defined directional intent?🤓

....your spouse has Eddie on her sneakers so she's a champion!
….caught a few Maiden shows from this tour on "The You Tube" and they sound great....Steve Harris still rips and have to hand it to Bruce, after 40 years, can still sing, (yea, the high stuff ..not so much)

She sure as hell is man! You got no idea..
Guess who grabbed a side of that monstrous pot and heaved it out with me? Or who came out and helped me collect that killer big juniper while 7 1/2 months pregnant?

Dropping into a big old 50 footer? (Seriously, it really is a solid 50)4611D592-4628-4B50-8EB4-3ABA18D34F25.jpeg

Yep, that’s her😃❤️❤️.

Ha, it’s awesome that you spotted Eddie, I wondered but didn’t think anyone would.

You know the saying “no friends on a powder day”?

How much trouble a guy gets in for ditching a date 2 turns into the first run never to be seen again until after last chair but still does it anyways every single time there is fresh deep snow?

Guess who can keep up all day long, charging full on??
Awesome! Unbelievable.

Well. The tree didn’t like winter much..
Don’t worry It’s just a little worse than it looks that’s all. Actually this was the south facing side and my snowpack wasn’t as deep as normal. I’m guessing it’s the result of cold air + sun. Other side is greener.

So for you guys practices with thuja should I go full on ruthless bareroot or some kinda partial thingy, what do you think?

Hopefully get to it tomorrow.

Hmm, edit, pic not loading, well it looks the same but half brown.
