Hi fellow bonsai lovers
I’m over the moon, scored this 30l Taxus for 30£, so until it’s not to late into the season would like to know what would you do to progress it this season( I’m in UK) never worked with yews so some advice would be appreciated. So far I just cat all the dead branches and exposed the nabari as it was buried very deep, it is planted in a mixture of pumice and compost, I would say it have some root damage as they where a bit fragile and black. Can I still repot it? I read August and September is the ideal time. What medium medium shall I use? Pumice or any UK practitioner can recommend something like kaizen soil. Also some directions in styling it would be great

Greetings!

So sorry, just saw your new thread. Here are my recommendations fwiw.

Would wait until late winter to repot this tree in inorganic media. This will give the tree the entire growing year to recover and grow strong. Kaizen media with biochar would work swell.

For now cover the roots again to give them some protection.

When repotting would gently take off about 50 - 60% of the soil, once the circling roots are trimmed off. Remove most from all around the outside of the tree, say about 1/2 way to the trunk, about 4 cm off the bottom and about 2.5-3 cm off the top. This will leave the root tips and nebari free of the shin.

The result is both nebari and the root tips will immediately grow in the inorganic media. It will also give one a shot at curating the nebari for the first time.

Next push a chopstick through the remaining media to aerate. Use a wood box sized for the tree, giving some room for root expansion..

Finally replace the lost potting media removed with Kaizen media under, around and atop the shin and chopstick properly..

Would repot in 2 years and remove the remainder of the organic media, replacing the final potting media with kaizen media.

Styling would begin with a chop down low somewhere between perhaps 10-18 cm in 2027 and remove all branches. Next build the bonsai from the new growth that will push as the new base branches.

Cheers!
