Summer Repotting of Chojubai and Princess Persimmon

For reference - Jonas tested 100% washed lava and got good growth.
I've used 80:20 perlite/coco but I don't think it's ideal.
The older white chojubai I have has been in APL for a long time.

I don't know if I can go down to those mixes here in Texas. I will probably start experimenting once I'm able to propagate some cuttings. I did notice that the one I have set into an elevated "mesh nest" like Onuma does is doing better than the one that is in a root pouch, both of them on the same substrate. The one in the pouch developed yellow edges on the leaves this year, while the other one didn't. I'm probably going to try 50/50 akadama pumice this year on the one in the pouch.

Apparently the yellow edges are a fungal infection that many/most chojubai have, almost by default, according to Michael Hagedorn on a Bonsai Wire podcast

I am using 75% pumice, 25% akadama. I think it is easy to overwater a chojubai.

Interesting - I was under the impression they liked to stay on the moister side, I’ll be more careful

Are you anti-lava or just for chojubai?

I'm still eating lunch and made a graph

I've also had this happen:

The 2nd graph here explains why good bud formation is a good predictor of health the next year. Large, fully-formed buds should be visible by October. If not, beware.
Boo, mine barely have any leaves now. Perhaps lack of electrolytes?
The free pseudocydonia I got from you is thriving though.
How do you get princess to make so many leaves?
I had been keeping them with my jms so next year will give them more sun. Ive been feeding them heavy doses of fish and mgro, but I don’t think I started feeding early enough in the growing season.

wait, you repotted it and then it dropped its leaves? when did you repot? pics?

I'm not anti-lava, just lazy. I don't know what advantage lava has over pumice, so I only use pumice and it's one less material to stockpile.

3 weeks ago. It’s still warm here, winter wont come for awhile yet.
Up here the persimmons are setting buds for next year; they started a few weeks ago. You can also differentiate flower buds soon. If the tree is growing poorly and fails to set buds before winter it will not leaf out next year and die. So an open question is what happens if you repot during late summer and interfere with the bud set. All bets are off if you don't get freezing weather.

Next year I will repot trees every month as an experiment.

Thank you for this thread. I bought a chojubai start at Eisei-en last year and now that he's relocating (and the fact that I couldn't afford any of the other trees from his moving sale, lol) there's a bit more pressure to keep it alive. I repotted about a month ago and have experienced the same fungal issues off and on. This is my first and only experience with chojubai and this thread has helped curb some of my anxiety, 😆.

Edit, this thread is only two weeks old, so I guess I did it then. My princess persimmon is just a young root cutting that Nao gave me anyway. I had two, one died mysteriously a couple months back.

I made a root cutting from this one when I repotted it as well, seems to be doing well so far.

The one i got from you at the swap meat i left alone. I tied some string around the trunks because one was falling out of the pot. My other princess I repotted in spring. I was more making a comment that mine aren’t as bushy as the ones you post pics of. Looks like I have fungus now 🙃

The standard APL mix was actually what my local bonsai nursery recommended and I thought she was talking nonsense because everywhere I go, I read Chojubai loves water.
Another reminder to not simply believe what I read online...

I agree. Never take advise from anyone as a Bible and blindly. Even a house over has different growing environment. Whatever mix work well for you... just keep using it. Don't fix thing that is not broken.
