Title says it all. I was digging up a cotoneaster I'd cut back and pulled this out from the base. I don't know if this could ever be used to make a raft bonsai with a big lump of roots at both ends- I've never really seen/noticed something out like this.

Either way I have time and space so if no ideas I'll probably just dump it in the ground for several years with the foliage at each ends sticking out and see what happens. Worst case scenario I'll cut the root in half and have two regular trees 😁

Many prostrate plants produce roots all along any stems that are in contact with damp soil. I've had this with cotoneaster, juniper, viburnum and some other plants.
Your plant may make a raft but I think it will need some more shoots to make trunks along the horizontal section.

Whatever you choose to do with it will take some years to develop.

IMHO It is asking for a raft style.

There are many interesting options out there click, click

In this style, you can go as crazy as you want.

or, you can bend the roots heavily and make a kind of "neagari"

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply- the links are great and given me lots to cheerfully ponder! Will report back in a few years :)
