Stand build off

It’s tempting.
I will give it a shot.
my shop is also a wheeled cart in the driveway,
but dry season is coming. I’ll have to start looking for some wood.
there is a shop in Ohio I used to get nice wood from.
He ships and used to cut small bits to fit in flat rate boxes to help reduce the cost.
It's a perfect winter project

Ya’ll talking’ ‘bout where to source wood from. Seems to me, knotty pine is available anywhere anytime. 🤣

I haven't shopped at the local one. I have ordered online from them, not bad, but slightly overpriced. Well, not really overpriced, but you buy the material blindly and from the little experience that I have with them, the pieces I have gotten are "paint" quality, and not for raw finishes. This is why I like Gilmer, the pictures on his site are of the actual material you are buying. And when you call or email for requests, they send you actual pictures so you can decide which to get. Also, most of what I buy are guitar tops and backs, book matched sets, which are not available there. My last guitar have a book match big leaf quilted maple top and book matched figured black limba back, the later was very hard to find.
I always drive up to mine as it's only 20 or so minutes away. The blocks I buy are for knife handles and end up being cheaper than buying blocks from dedicated knife material suppliers. Those guitars are stunning, absolutely beautiful work. I've never seen figured black limba before, I'm gonna have to start looking for it though.....

Lumber for instrument is another level higher. Here we make stands that are supposedly muted and serve the aesthetic purpose without taking the focus away from bonsai. For musical instrument, they stand at the front and have to deliver the sound quality. Speaking of things hard to find, my brother placed an order with a German luthier (I don't know the name cuz I never asked) and it took him more than 10 years to deliver. Mind you it wasn't a quiet wait. The guy would often email my brother and told him that he traveled to such and such country and found this piece or that piece. Then he emailed the pictures and renditions of what he think it would look like and what kind of tone it would have on the guitar. Then my brother would give his approval. This goes to every element of the guitar including the tiny pieces on the rosette. When my brother received his classical guitar, it was certainly one of a kind and played beautifully.

For me in this bonsai stand venture, it would be another thing that I can spend the evening piddling in my shop when I am not able to piddle with my bonsai.

The more I think about the bonsai stand this thought keeps coming to mind. So I am going to put it out here.

I don't know if I will ever be able to achieve this level but this is the philosophy that I am striving for: I am going to build bonsai stands that would behave like a mother or father. When under a tree, I want to see just the tree like a precious child and have a pleasing feel about the stand. When the tree goes away I want to be able to examine the stand and realize how exquisite it really is.

My wife probably would just laugh and told me I can really BS. :D

Did you already come up with a design yet?

Look for either black limba or korina. Most places label black limba as korina (white limba), white limba rarely have the veins black limba does.

10 years is a little bit too much time. Thankfully he delivered, but after a year I would be worried that it was a scam. There is a guy in YouTube that commissioned a 17 string and got scammed bad... then he teamed up with Perry and finally made his "dream" guitar happen. What you are describing is the same process Perry and David do for custom orders. I just noticed that David is no longer actively accepting orders, and Perry is booked up for the time being...

My brother didn't pay until he received it. No way would he pay almost 50K in advance. My brother told me that man was a legit master luthier.
BTW that 18 string guitar looks sick!!! Sick sick sick! Way above my skill level.

Something like this for the masculine one? A masculine frame with concave curve & flare legs and a floating top. Of course I can always go with a lower and more subtle stand as well. I will know once I stare at the wood a little bit more.

Me likes!

The feminine one is harder. If I go with delicate curves and able to achieve it, it may be like a young woman and takes the center stage. If I go with substantial convex curves, it may be squatty.
I'm still trying to decide on a design myself

I was going to go with something more American, don’t get me wrong I love the stands that are out there. But at some point we have to find our own way, right? I mean the Japanese and Chinese do it differently so why should we stick to one way
