Thanks for the input.

It was bare rooted and heavily cut back two years ago.repotted in pumice and orchid bark.

For 15 for sure!!its up for 55 though!

If you want a young Engelman Spruce I can sell you one for that much. Grown from seed by me, seedling cut, in their fifth year. Can do a video call if you want to pick one.

Evening all,

I have the option of buying this bonsai material from an online private seller.

Two questions that I’m hoping to have answered from you experienced bunch….

Firstly, are you able to make an educated guess as to what kind of spruce this is? The owner was very honest and said he wasn’t sure.

Secondly, do you feel it has potential for upright or bunjiji styling? For some reason the appearance of this tree is appealing to me!

I would pass, as others have said. You can pick up substantial trunks around Christmas time or if you do a bit of ground work, you could still find stock left over from Christmas, that will be well established by now. Here's one from a garden centre can't of been more than 25 quid. Piciea abies/European Spruce.

My over enthusiasm always leads to casualties with this species. My over enthusiam also leads me on the right path to find stuff like this "if though seeks thou shall find"

I decided rather than go with the formal upright, I'm going to use what's on offer in the base and try to build something more unique. So a couple higher roots have been kept and I've potted the tree at a slant to give more feeling of a tree with a powerful, rugged base and the cut root there will be jinned and help to create a more interesting composition..
The tree will be reduced to that main leader in the middle to create some dynamic movement
