Hey, does anybody out there have a source for "grey" (not white) pumice?

Only thing I know of is the (pricey) hyuga that I get from House of Bonsai on ebay...but it's more tan. Would be great if there was something cheaper...

I'll be picking up from a new source on April 12th. I'll let you know if the color is any better.

You can always pick the white pieces off the surface.

I have often thought about yet never actually tried used food coloring on pumice. Pumice is absorbant and it would seem to me that either the green or red food coloring would absorb into and change the color of pumice enough to make it less noticeable than its normal color. Gotta try this one day....

I have been looking for a mix of brown and black crushed lava to put on top of dry stall as it tends to look pretty odd overall. Seem to have a difficult time finding it in 5 gallon or so packaging.

Well, it's not cheap but Stone Lantern sells their "Masters soil"

And from the photos is appears to be all darker in color. The label says it's pumice and lava.

Also, Jim Gremel was selling, and likely will again in the future "Clay King" soil which is a pre-mixed akadama/lava/pumice product from Japan that has a nice look to it. It's not cheap but compared to internet prices a 14L bag for $38 isn't too bad. see photo:

Pumice is abundant here, but I've never seen any except the dingy off white color. I would also agree that you should be able to stain it to a better color.

I don't know about food coloring, but there are many natural dyes that I think could be used.

Walnut skins, coffee, tobacco, tea, all leave a good stain in varying shades from black to tan. Some mushrooms such as western red dye, inky caps and shaggy manes will procuce permanent stains.

I'll do some checking with the local yards to see if there's anything available. I know alot do carry pumice. I've walked through vast areas of the stuff and never really gave it any thought. May be time to revisit some of those old haunts and see what's laying around, color-wise. Rick
