Almost forgot about this guy… I redid the chop scar midway through last summer because it was “excessive“ . Anyway, the chop scar is already halfway closed and won’t be around for another 1 to 2 years

Off with its head!!! The trunk needed something more to set it up for greatness… .

Whats the over/ under for years to close the chop from today? I say three!

It was a banner day for these two root over rock plantings... they've been upgraded to both akadama based soil AND stoneware pots, a Rayner porcelain and a Koyo, both patinated with GA red clay- it won't come out!

I honestly don't remember exactly when I started these but no more then 5 years ago... tridents develop quickly! The seedlings were probably 2 years when they got placed on the rocks. I might have moved the 1 year old seedlings to tall thinner containers to encourage longer root growth the year before creating the planting.

This is the last trident from the group I ground grew down in GA. It's a bit of an ugly duckling, but it has sentimental value. It also has the makings of a pretty decent nebari.

These two saw 22 F two days after getting here- didn't experience a frost in GA last fall before getting put on the moving truck- and then were packed into the cold frame with just a thin layer of mulch over their pots and apparently didn't blink at that or being frozen solid all winter with multiple mornings below 0 F. A few quick shots at the re-pots which entailed removing mostly successful threaded root grafts. They now need chop sites addressed and canopy work.

First re-pot of ‘23’… only a few of the Tridents and the flowering apricots think it’s spring so I can hopefully do this in stages over the next month or so. I started a bunch of Tridents seedlings last year, but clearly didn’t start soon enough in the spring … These could be the teeny tiniest root grafts I have ever started. Let’s hope they work.

I winter all my nicer maples( this one barely makes the cut) in my cold room, an unheated workshop/gym off the back of my garage. This one gets hit with some frosts and freezes each fall but get's moved into the cold room by mid November. I try to keep the temps in there between 30-40 F for as long as possible. All the deciduous trees in there- and a few outside on my patio- have broken dormancy to 1 degree or another.

Yes, that chop is ugly. This tree was initially being designed as an hommage to The Piglet, currently owned by Mach5. Unfortunately, best intentions aren't gauranteed to produce the results you want. Ultimately, the trunk was lacking, but the base was pretty good, so I'm willing to work with it .
