Some projects for next spring

I considered starting a new thread but opted to keep this one going. Any way, the buds on all the layers from last year started to swell a few days ago. Typically, I wouldn't work an air layer's roots one season after layering it, but these grew roots soooo vigorously that I decided to go for it. Every one of the layers had filled their respective pots with roots like this.

Some of the layers appeared to have a good start to the nebari...others not so much. All of them had a board screwed to their base, root hormone applied to the bare areas, and potted up in training pots.

I repotted four of the five layers, and will hopefully get to the last one this week. It will be interesting to see how the roots look next year...fingers crossed.

You're not kidding Besides these, I've repotted 3 other maples, worked the roots on the Arakawa in the ground, potted 15 Chinese quince seedlings, and planted out 40 trident and palmatum seedlings...and then there's the trees going into the ABS show. I'm tired.

I've been digging up some Chinese quince rooted cuttings and haven't been impressed with the roots...they run far and thick; kind of like the top growth. I've been thinking about how I want to do it better next time; maybe Anderson flats on the ground and allow the roots to escape, and maintain a finer system in the flat. I'll load some pix later.

My only experience with Chinese quince came yesterday...they seem to really like their tap root! I cut it back hard on most of them then potted them up with the intention of planting out next year. It'll be interesting to see what the roots look like then.
