Great show again. Much bigger venue and easier to get to. They certainly took care of getting people in more efficiently. Seems like the organizers took critiques of the first expo to heart and successfully addressed them. Very impressive show and a great shopping opportunity. Here are a few trees.

Thanks for sharing!

I thought the display by Michael Hagedorn was great. I wasn't a fan of his non-traditional display in 2022 (but I like the idea of breaking with convention a lot!). This year's was fantastic. I hope we see more of outside the box bonsai and display in the coming years. Bonsai originated in Japan, but I don't think we need to stay in the lines that they've drawn.

Brian, You got some great shots of the early light!! Pretty sure that JBP is Jona's.

The Hornbeam is Jeff Stern. It won Best Large Deciduous. Absolutely spectacular tree.

I can't remember who owned the Shohin Shimpaku and Chinese Elm. I loved that Elm, though. Fantastic tree with amazing ramification in such a small tree.

Peter Tea had an Itoigawa (or shimapku?) juniper next to the hornbeam that was just as magnificent. It was a relatively stereotypically styled tree, but super full, healthy and detailed. The mind-blowing bit was that the tree was completely unwired and hadn't been wired in three years! 🤯

and is it possible to have TOO much deadwood?

I struggled to like this tree in person. Marvelous, beautiful deadwood, but it feels like it's kinda just going everywhere without control, and the deadwood extends below the table it's placed on. The foliage didn't seem significantly controlled, but that's RMJ for you. There were actually stanchions around the lower jins so that nobody would walk into it.

Yeah, that was a very traditional tree, executed to perfection. I loved it.

I could not agree more! Yes way beyond a pleasant composition. Yet that’s what the judges thought was more than exceptional!
