Came across this five gallon Stewartia pseudocamellia yesterday while out at a nursery. The price is $95 and the tree is slightly taller than me, so I would say 6-7 feet.

Pros: Can see some radially arranged surface roots and the trunk is pretty thick at the base (forgot to measure but would guess 2 inches?)
Cons: Trunk is totally straight and there are no good low branches to cut back to, so it would just be a chop and pray (I think the one at the base is too low and at a weird angle and the next one up is more than a foot from the base).

Probably if I were to buy it, I would go for a large final size and first sort out the roots in an Anderson flat or another large pot before chopping.

No. Save your money and put it into one grown with bonsai in mind.

Would have to say no as well.
If it’s cheap and you want to cut to a stump, then sure, go for it.

Thanks folks, I didn't pick it up on the first visit because I wasn't sure. Maybe I'll have better luck when I visit my folks in pa, surprising number of bonsai nurseries near them.
