Today I picked up a boxwood. Big round ball and I always have been curious if they were made out of more smaller plants or 1 bigger one.
Turned the thing into a shohin and now I know the answer. ;)

Nevermind I know what you mean with dimensions..

It is now 15cm that is almost 6 inch.
Before it was about 50cm that would be around 20 inch 19,6850394inch to be exact..
(google my best friend ;) )

How much root work have you done?

About 2% rootwork.
Lift it out of the plastic container. Gave it a little shake so most of the soil fell off and transplanted it into the colander. I've cut one big root to fit the colander, nothing major and carved the surface root.
Next fall I will remove more old soil and replace it with akadama and place it in a bonsai pot if all goes well.

However you can repot them right now just protect them against cold , strong winds and hot sun. And boxes can handle root pruning very well.

Chris,

I'm not criticizing but that's an awful lot of foliage removal with only a 2% root reduction. I lost a beauty this year because of what I believe to be a lack of root reduction. You did a great job but do you think it will make it?

You are absolutely right Vin. I didn't do any rootwork because I wanted to keep some of the old soil and make sure that it has enough energy stored to push new growth in spring. Their roots are also vulnerable in the winter so who knows what amount might not survive.
And eventually parts of the rootball shall die off because parts of the tree are not in use anymore.

My plan is to check up in spring how it came true the winter and than if necessary repot it with rootwork and balance the whole thing out, otherwise if all goes well I'll stick to the plan and repot it in fall.
