I've posted this on another thread before but never gave it its own thread. This is the result of getting bored last winter and needing to get my fingernails dirty. I blogged the whole thing but wanted some feedback from you nuts if you had the time. Here is how it looked when I first picked it up:

After the first cut back:

Please pardon the quality of those pictures. I think my camera was drinking sake at the time.

This is the shot I shared on the Tree thread. It was mentioned that it should be taken back further.

And while I think it's better now:

I was curious if you thought that perhaps cutting it back to one of these marked leaders would get it to a more believable size canopy:

Thanks for your feedback as always.

Cheers,

Great little tree. I vote number 3:D. I think you should cut back the apex even lower (the main branches, too) then wire out. That's a nice trunk, and the shorter the tree the more powerful the trunk will be.

Now we're entering mame sizes! I'm not sure my macho manliness can handle such a diminutive sized tree :)

Thanks for commenting. I'm hoping this thirsty little bugger thrives better next year than this one. I had to keep sphagnum on it all summer to avoid it from drying out... which it did... twice.

Hell yeah.

More round. More old.

Nice.

I like it a lot. I looked through a bunch of barberrys late this summer and found a few with decent trunks and nebari for once, but nothing like this one. Once it fills out it's going to be a very convincing image. I am distracted by that back branch. I'm not sure exactly why. Maybe once it fills out it won't be an issue.

I agree with you. The back branch is an eye soar in this picture. Problem is, it really helps round out the image in the 3D image. I'll try and get a top down tonight so you can see what I mean. If I lost that branch, I would make a better photo but a worse tree unfortunately. Perhaps when it fills in, it will look better.

Any thoughts on an style/color pot for this little guy? I like the width but not the depth of the current shoes. Something on the lighter side perhaps?

I like the maroon idea actually.

This one is too small but something similar?

Pardon the cell phone shot.
