I have 2 more apples that I’m messing around w one here I’ll update some day coming up soon . This one I bent so hard it sorta cracked the bark so I sealed and wrapped w buddy tape for precaution
Oh RIP to this tree ,, only thing get get knocked down by the wind .. oh well.

Thanks for sharing! I have six crab apple cuttings from Brent at varying stages of development. This is great inspiration for me.
Thanks man. I’m flattered I’d hardly call my crab apple worm inspirational but I’m trying to develop atleast 1 or 2 good ones .. I’m gonna put the two I have left in bigger pots or build nice little wooden boxes to boost

It’s-a great start.

fwiw: Given the tree was put into a larger pot, the branch and nebari development will speed up and achieve your goals quite a bit sooner.

Crabs love to room to roam!

Cheers

I don’t see a lot of them either. The only thing I can guess is that the apple-cedar-rust thing scares people away. Beautiful trees though. Especially if you can keep leaf spots at bay

I don’t see a lot of crab apple love .. I don’t see a lot of them on here unless I’m just missing something..
I agree! Enjoying your progressions. I've got a few including some from Brent and some I've grown from seed for ~4 years - need to get a thread going soon.

I had an air layer I carved this spring that got ravaged by aphids… I’ve been asking him to see when he may update the site .. I don’t think it ever will

I'm thinking of doing a malus also, maybe I should get a ladybug army ready 😃

That stinks. Aphids absolutely love to eat new crabapple shoots, but once you learn to watch for it in the spring, they are easy to spot and easy to treat. I'll take aphids over pseudomonas or borers any day.

Yeah, I get the sense that Brent at Evergreen gardenworks is starting to wind down his business. His website used to be updated much more frequently.

mine always have aphids on them it seems - I always buy like 500 lady bugs every two weeks or so for a few bucks and that seems to help ALOT

Your trees are making great progress! Also looks like you are learning an awful lot about these persnickety plants.

And persnickety they are, often tossing foot long soft branches, creating taperless sections of trunk without intervention and curling their leaves while one is getting a coffee refill!

In our neck of the woods an aphid attack on crabapples, cherries and the like is fairly rare, maybe roses on occasion. The thing crabs get the most (in spring) if one doesn’t stay on top of is rust.

Best
