Hi everyone,

I received a Shimpaku Juniper 1 month ago.
The leaves of the tree are losing their needle-like form and are starting to open up.
Should i be concerned?
Please advise.

That's juvenile foliage that appears when juniper is stressed. Too much pruning too much work...
There’s nothing much to do, just wait few years, it'll be slowly replaced by scale foliage when settled.

I agree with petegreg about it being juvenile foliage, but it isn't ALWAYS caused by a tree being stressed. It can also be triggered by a tree that is really healthy. For example, if a tree is root-bound and you repot it in good fresh soil, you may get some juvenile foliage in the short term. You can also sometimes trigger it by fertilizing.

However once the growth rate slows, new growth will revert to scale foliage.

Thank you for your replies, Petegreg and Bonsai Nut!
