This looks fun. It's getting old.
The only good thing I can think of for that weather is ice fishing, and bh my recollection, there aren't a whole lot of lakes in South Dakota. Screenshot_20250213_102159_Weather.jpg
As you can see, our temps are all over the thermometer.

Actually, we are the "Glacial Lakes" region in NE South Dakota. Water everywhere and ice fishing is extremely popular here. We usually end up with between 20-30" of ice by the end of winter. Walleye is usually the target species but we have a lot of perch, northern pike, crappie, and bluegill as well.
When it is this cold, it is too cold for me to take my kids out with my pop-up shelter but lots of people around here have ice castles or sno-bears which is a lot more comfortable. (just very expensive)Screenshot 2025-02-13 113438.png

Wow! Ice fishing, for some reason, isn't a thing down here. 😆
Your lakes have twice as much ice as we have precipitation in a whole year!
I remember visiting Mount Rushmore and some other places in SD as a boy. Reptile Gardens and Bear Country were a couple of them, if my brain is accurate. Also got to visit Devil's Tower in Wyoming the same trip. But that certainly wasn't in the winter!

The Black hills are in the SW corner of the state and are zone 5b. In the NE corner we are 4a! It is beautiful out there. Ponderosa pines EVERYWHERE.

Yes. Success rate unknown. I just started bonsai about a year and a half ago. Last winter I had so few trees that I kept them all in my unheated garage and had good success. This last year i um....maybe...um collected a few more trees and couldn't put them all inside. Anything for my zone or colder I left outside huddled together and mulched in on the ground. They are all covered with snow but I have noticed that the darn rabbits have been chewing on several of them.
Anything zone 5 or warmer I put in my garage.
We will see what happens this spring when everything thaws out. That is not for a couple of months yet though.
I don't know anyone else who does bonsai here so I am just learning as I go.

A few more trees, Wonder how that happened. ;) In a few weeks I'll start my 3rd bonsai year/anniversary. Maybe put some chicken wire around the ones the rabbits are snackin on. Sounds like you're doing the best you can with the weather you have. You've found the right place since you don't know anyone, books help me a lot. Have you tried starting a "Anyone from South Dakota?" thread. might be a few like minded individuals closer than you think. :)

Welcome to the middle of nowhere.
I think we live in the same place! You just have winter temperatures bordering on subarctic. I love the isolation here, but it can be pretty inconvenient at times. The nearest bonsai club or nursery to me is a 4.5 hour drive. Much farther than that for a really good bonsai nursery. I'm looking for a way to garner interest in bonsai to start some kind of club here. As I don't have FB, I think I may speak with some local retail business owners to see if I can leave flyers in a noticeable but not obtrusive location. And maybe, once I get some halfway decent looking trees, I would be able to leave them at a front counter or service desk with a business card on the pot, just for a couple days at a time and switch them out every week. Say Mondays and Wednesdays?

Flooding last week still has ground near saturation. The Ohio was not in play which when it is, our local river that floods us in or out, gets even higher and cannot crest till the Ohio is past crest as expected this Mon through Wed next week. Our road could be flooded 3 or 4 days.

Rain all day Sat with flash flooding
High winds Sat night
Temps Sunday 60°F dropping to...
Mon. Low mid teens flash freeze, high 31°
Tue Wed Ohio crests keeping back waters in flood.
