I must be honest. I am not sure I have ever seen a seiju elm in person.

How small are the leaves really? I have an elm in my garden which has as default leaf size little under a thumbnail. Are these much smaller?

Leaves in true seiju are tiny can be 1/16 of an inch long or less. Keeping ahead of all that tiny foliage can be a pain in the ass. it can get very congested on branching and require thinning

They are very small... and the tree itself is relatively hardy and responds well to bonsai culture. The branches are more supple than Hokkaido, which is a smaller leaved cultivar but much weaker and quite brittle.

Thx, that looks indeed a LOT smaller. than what I have now.

I have an offer for one at a decent price. about 3 inch nebari. 1ft tall, with decent movement in the bottom half of the trunk. Top might make a nice shohin. Was not sure it really would make a diversification of the collection :).

You've been on my mind a lot as of late ...hope this finds you well.

I absolutely love the one I have. The small foliage adds so much texture to the canopy ... with age the bark grows gnarly as well. *Bark fein here...is why I actually bought it. But the foliage is endearing. I absolutely love looking at the canopy of mine.

Thx. Another 1 1/2 weeks and I am allowed to use both legs again. Then 4-8 weeks of regaining strength and I should be able to walk my trees around again. SIgh.
Fortunately my employer is not pushing me too hard to get back fulltime. 30% right now. 50% next week.

Thx. Let's see whether I fall into the [no] More trees! trap.

End of the tunnel light is shinning bright for ya. As this was a very challenging time. Just keeping down is mentally challenging. Let alone the physical aspect.

I'm glad your boss is understanding. I think a person's character and work ... stands for them in times like this. Clearly showing your valued there. Which is a good feeling for certain.

Just don't go overdoing it. Ya hear!?!

*No more trees trap. I left some FB groups, I think seeing ones adding trees wet my thirst there...my focus right now is finding new gym hacks for my home gym. I'm quite addicted to of all things...running shorts to workout in. Those spandex are hideous and cliche. (To know me. I'm no typical woman. I detest shopping for clothes, shoes or anything personal. My husband buys my shoes as I can wear his size.) 🙃 so adding trees at this time is low on my radar. But I've brought in a good number while sitting on that fence of "no more trees". But this species... I do like a lot. But...I am of the mentality...I love also working with elm in general. They offer so much. This one just stands out.

My wife won't let me. She joins to the fysio and tells me at home I should not push certain boundaries. Why have boundaries if one cannot push them!?

hahaha, I am a typical man. I do not like shopping either. Except maybe for bonsai stuff. But even that!

Sounds like it. I have a number of different elms. I do not know any of the actual species; I should get an experienced botanist in my yard, lol. But.. Now I am getting one which is defined!

had the luck to find it after a long time of online searching and finally found a belgian nursery last year, which shipped it to me.

These things grow so fast, but you have to be really carefull, because the bud from literally ANYWHERE. Im almost weekly cutting of clustered branching coming from the same spot (4-5 branches always).
They are also very prone to reverser taper.

See mine last week:

If trained right they will make great shohin or even mame

Also with 2 of my cuttings im planing on creating mame trees, the one above (the donor tree) will be turned into somewhat medium size tree.

Something like that for the mame (referencing @Eric Schrader because I just really like his style of growing):

Similar design like that for the main tree (will take a long time):

I really like Seiju too.
Corky bark and small leaves looks great on medium sized bonsai but Seiju is great for smaller bonsai. Here's a few I've been working on.
