I have some 2 year old scots pine that I'm developing and they shot out a lot of buds down the whole length of the tree at the end of the summer. I'm wondering if it would be better to remove most of them before spring, or let them extend and remove what I don't need during the summer. Here's some pics of what I'm working with. (I permanently left wire on a few trees to see how it increases the trunk thickness, a little experiment to see how scots pine reacts)20250212_115109.jpg20250212_115209.jpg

Not unusual for hard cut back of Scots.

First inclination is to cut back to 3-4 inner buds, perhaps leaving the end one… yet the images don’t show the wide view and it’s hard to visualize the big picture

Can you please post a couple images from further back with a clear background?

Cheers

I've had this more often than not in younger scots pines.
Some of these buds will develop proper branches, others will lag behind and die off.

The best approach in my view is to rub all of them off but leave one or two on the positions where you'd want future branches. See which one flushes out the most favorable and then remove the other.

Also, enjoy the moment! It's often pretty difficult to get this many buds on a pine and scots pines stop doing this after one or two times.
