Saving a maple

I have no idea what Peter Chan does. He does not live in my life :)

I do not think you should split the trunk.

Be carefull thinking out the tree. Make clean cuts and let the top grow. Then this species closes cuts very well.

Thank you so much. For all your advices. I’ll keep you up around May to let you know what happens then. Until then i’ll pass my time grinding through my courses in University.

@leatherback
If i may ask one last questions, i’ve been having problem with my trident seedling. Some leaves are a bit shriveled and discolored. I have posted a thread but i think it went to the realms of the ignored. Do you have any idea what’s wrong?

I saw the post. Do not know what it is. Fungal might be. Could be a type of mite. Could be mechanical damage.

My first guess would be fungal. Maybe wait for the next set of leaves and see whether these are normal?

Ok thanks

Just a simple questions to everybody. The maple is planted in a 4L colander as I wanted it to produce fine roots. Many of you suggested to plant it in the ground. So my dad just got me a 100L pot, honestly the best option i’ve got since i don’t have ground/ garden. Should i put the plant inside the 100L pot? I don’t mean to repot it, but literally putting the colander too inside the pot. Would it help bring more vigor and health to the tree? Also should i put a tile under the colander to promote only lateral roots?
Ps.. sorry for the bad illustration hahahahaa.

Bigger is not always better. Too big a pot and there is not enough happening in the pot, oxygen exchange is poor OR the plant is drowning

@leatherback
Oh ok. I was thinking of like as if i was growing it in the ground. Another idea i had was just putting some soil in it the putting the colander on top, and if some roots grow below let them be, then in spring 2022, repot the plant in a better training pot.

@leatherback mmmm... i guess i kinda did my calculations wrong..... since the pot is a truncated cone, i though i could get it’s volume through calculations. I guess i kinda got my calculations wrong. Used the diameter instead of the radius in the formula. Hahahha. The pot is actually around 30L. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH SORRY ABOUT THAT

Ahhhh. I didn’t know that there were that much difference. I thought of using a lava rock, peat and perlite mix. Mostly lava rock and perlite ‘cause i wanted it to be more airy and open. But if you say that i shouldn’t do it, then i’ll follow you.
Well also the “100L pot” did some damage to my logic too.
THe water exchange and gas exchange work differently in soil or pot, unfortunately.

If your maple was happy and healthy I would have sai, go for it. For now, I would ensure health first. You want the tree to occupy the pot quickly. But.. This is not a laaarge pot.

Yeah i guess i thought it was bigger ‘cause of the numbers. From what i can see from the holes in the colander, it has many fine roots. And it’s actually pushing some nice vigor. I was just asking to know if this could actually help it. I’m still kinda new in this whole horticultural world.
Anyway what about my idea of putting a tile under the colander, is it doable or better not do it?

Btw thank you so much. And i’m sorry if i usually ask so much. I just fell in love in this whole world,always in mind 24/7

i bet you could hack the sides off the base if you keep some roots attached to it. like peter chan. i have split a handful of trees like this and theyve survived

Well.... i did it.

Quick question, since in a week or two i’ll start working on it, trimming some growth, deciding some new apex and stuff. I’d like to know how much i can reduce it. How much of branches can i take off and how much should i leave?

I would let it be and grow this season, no pruning, no styling
