Rudd’s Wisteria #1

I went on a trip to visit @NaoTK, and while I was gone my girlfriend told me it got some fall color. Nao kept laughing at me because I was so happy to see a color other than brown. 😂

By the time I got back leaves were pretty much all dropped, so I defoliated and wired.

Not bad for one year’s progress.

Repotted at the new angle a couple weeks ago, and it’s starting to leaf out now. Sadly no flowers again this year. I moved it to a new part of the garden to get more morning sun in hopes that helps for next year.

In any case right now I’m more interested in getting nice structure instead of flowering.

I like the new angle a lot!! I am far from an expert on getting them to flower but I think I am about to have my best flowering year yet (if so I will post a photo) but I was told to prune very quickly and not let energy go to elongating shoots. As you mentioned you are more interested in development, but when you feel it is ready for more of a flower show-- it did seem to work for me this year.

Interesting. Prune the leaflets back before they harden?
Thats correct, I basically pruned all extensions once I had a pair of leaves. It was a professional who suggested that (Danny Coffee), but between that and a good dose of fertilizer last year (and maybe a year without repotting) I have more flower buds than ever.

I did not have to do much of the partial defoliation as pervious years due to that pruning as well.

No prune the ends out of the developing growth as it emerges pinch back to one or two of the compound leaves. Pinching the small leaflets on the compound leaves doesn’t do anything really
