This is what I was looking for. Complementary colors, pots that enhance the color of flowers, trunk and foliage of a tree -

Choosing a container by formula is OK, but it can lose a lot of the spontaneity and creativity that can make a superior pairing. That wheel is also a bit complicated and confusing.

I'd use those color choices as suggestions on where to start.

I understand the color wheel. I’ve worked with tone and hue color wheels that expand from the base bold colors….muted color tones often found in pottery. The base color wheel is a good starting point reference. The link you enclosed in your posting is a good thorough color review….and a good reference point for pot choosing.

I use the color wheel as a part of the thought process too but not as a rigid rule.

Another thing to note - perfect color
Complements lack subtlety and can be quite jarring/cartoonish looking. Often complemental colors as a highlight (say “purple” clay or an underlying blue hue to a glaze) work better IMO or something slightly adjacent to the complement instead. Also, you’d typically want to adjust saturation depending on the focus you want - shohin pots and mame pots in general seem to get away with higher saturation looking good than larger stand-alone pots. Textures, etc all come
Into play. I would advise the formulaic approach as a guideline for direction but avoid a perfect 180 in color. As an example - for my crabapple I have picked out a white pot with patina because I want to highlight a the white of the flowers and the buds are a deeper pink-red alongside the green leaves. The red-green present already is complementary, so I choose to emphasize continuity of color going down to the pot. Sometimes others will do continuity with a blueish or greenish pot in the same situation where those match the leaves somewhat but offset the pink-reddish buds.

It all depends on what about the deciduous tree you want to accentuate based on the color of glaze , shape and /or texture.
