What the folks are describing is the Ebihara Technique for working roots, or a variation thereof. Some folks just say “working the roots”.

To clear up the Anderson Flat situation, @Brian Van Fleet is correct, one could use an Anderson flat for this tree.
I recommended a wood box for a number of reasons based upon my experiences with small maples. These include size, movability, extra porosity, amount of media needed and scope of work including the amount of time the tree will stay relatively small considering all the work it will need. Doubt the growth will be impaired in a smaller box.
Yet this is what our site is all about, giving a person advice from folks with wide range of experience.
