As usual, there are a couple nasty bitchfest threads going on here, as well as much sadness. So I just wanted to shine the light on one of the many reasons, this is such a great place. We all know @Mellow Mullet is a wizard with all things flowering. He offered to send me a couple serrissa cuttings, even though my track record with them sucks. So yesterday, I receive this box. Chock full of serrissa's, some Satsuki azaleas, a dwarf crepe, a little fern.. Just because. Refusing any payment or gift in return. These are difficult species for me, for some reason I don't do well with azaleas or serissa, but will do my best to take care of these lovely gifts. I have also been the recipient of fun surprises from several other good people here. So, aside from the bickering, and petty arguments there is such a spirit of kindness here. Albeit, good advice, patient instruction, or just friendship. Just wanted to share my "garden in a box". Thanks, man!! Feel free to share any of the random acts of kindness you've experienced here. box 1.jpg box 2.jpg

Nice! The trees that have been given to me are my most precious. I will experiment (aka kill) other trees, but my gift trees get the royal treatment. I want them to be around when the giver asks, 10 years later, "hey how is that X tree doing?"

I fully intend to pay it forward. I put on my big girl pants today and did my first serious pruning (except for my natal plum this spring) on stuff that was in serious need. First attempt at striking cuttings other than jade. If they take, I will have a bunch to share. Also, I fear, when it's time to move stuff inside, I may have overestimated my indoor space, which will result in marital discord, and may need to liquidate a few or get divorced ;)

I guess it wants me to say more, as it keeps putting an extra post up. I suppose it depends on how much development the hubby needs. Is he a stick in a pot, or decent development material???:D:p:p:p

Been married 34 years (I was a child bride). He's just started to get used to the little trees. He's fine with them outside, even fixed up a bench up for me. But when they come inside, he gets a little cranky.

He sent me an azalea last year.
It almost made it through the winter.
That is a very real concern for me also. Winter here is a crapshoot. They can be relatively mild like last year, or brutal, like the year we lost 9 trees in our yard in one night during an ice storm. An unheated garage is about my best option.

Call me before potting all those up - I can also give valid advice for Wintering, etc...

I had to get them into pots Saturday, when I got them. There were two small azalea cuttings, that were wrapped up in wet paper towels and plastic wrap. The bigger one was in a terra cotta pot, that got broken in the shipping. I just slip potted into a larger pot best I could. Everything else, I just tried to put in a pot approximately the size of the soil and roots. Do I need to do something different now? I thought it best to at least get them into something as soon as possible. For sure will need your expertise with these!

Fair enough and easy to understand for certain - do you have my number? Wintering will be the main concern and for the record looks like you have a Willow Leaf Oak there too ;)

I had 4 hours to kill with ribs and sausage on the smoker, and figured doing it sooner would be better than later. Some of them looked a little sad from being in a box for a couple days. I left the little oak in when I potted the other. Random acorn per John, lol. Yep, I have your number. Best if I call when I'm not at work. Let me know what's best for you. Thanks!
