Boy, this one was making me nervous! Another extra-cold winter victim? It's was getting to be almost May with no signs of life!

But the 80 degree temps yesterday finally coaxed it back to life!

Man, it's been a rough year after such a cold winter. Could be its last year, although it is still pushing new growth, which is always a good sign.

Do you protect that oak tree in the winter?

I moved from California to Virginia just a few years ago and am still learning what each tree can tolerate. Winter before last I buried it in mulch as well as all my other trees and didn't lose a single tree.

Then I had kind of a moment like "Why do we need a cat when there's no mice?"

So last winter I just put all the trees out of the wind on the ground. And I lost a ton of them.

Lesson learned!
