I am new to this but trying to get into this hobby! Looking to see if I can turn this tree into a bonsai or if it is too large. This is a Chinese Arborvitae I believe. It has been growing in my backyard for the last 30+ years. Can anyone guide me or give me any advice to see if it is possible and where I can start with this? I am located in Connecticut so the climate is very cold in the winter and hot summers if that helps.

Chinese arborvitae = Platycladus orientalis a cypress family species from northern and eastern Asia.

It's becoming more common as landscape material, and occasionally as bonsai.

I have never owned one. I would suspect that in general all aspects of care and bonsai training techniques would be quite similar or the same as for Chamaecyparis obtusa, (Hinoki cypress) Look up Hinoki and you will have tons of information.

Wouldn’t both with this. It will be a hassle getting it out and a pain to work in since this species takes some finesse to work on. Unless there is a great trunk base on it (which you havent shown and need to consider) I’d skip it
