Does anyone have any experience with Cotinus coggygria? This is my first piece of material, urban yamadori. This was first sighted 2 1/2 years ago when I moved my business to Red Hook. It was vigorously growing in a very large planter in front of the space I rented. It had been quite beaten up by something but very healthy and thriving. I ignored it for a season as I wasn't quite ready for my life long bonsai obsession () to take me over yet. I guess I wasnt committed enough yet. But the next spring I finally had a garden and something snapped ! This tree motivated me to take what will be a rest of my life plung. And as you will learn so did this piece of material.

By moving into this new space I inherited the bush. In the spring of 2012 I did the first work of my life on a tree and cut it back hard. It had two trunks, one almost horizontal and the one seen in the image below. I then let it go nuts and cut it back again. None if this did I do with any real experience. Judging from how vigorously it grew I am sure some of you out there could have gotten some amazing results out of it by the end if the summer. It had at least three flushes of growth. I didn't know how to deal with it properly but I did get to practice and take chances. I was going to wait until this coming spring to collect it from its huge "50 gallon" container but then that bitch SANDY came through the New York Harbor. Red Hook as some of you more Urban savey folks might know was hit extremely hard in Nov. I had 6feet of water come crush my business along with everything within 3/4 of a mile from me. During the fist few hours after I learned of what had come of the neighborhood I had decided to try and save this and several other potted trees on the pier. There was all kinds of oil and other nasties in the salty water. I needed to try and save these tree as a symbol of perseverance and hope for what I was about to go through in the next few months.

So yes it's in the ICU so to speak in a deciduous comma. I got some good/ok roots and washed them well, bare rooted it, potted it and am praying it comes back to life in a few months.

Keep you fingers crossed. I will post updates in the spring. And an image of it pe-sandy.

Thanks for reading

Oops...you're right of course, I was mixing up the forums.

Are you a member of IBC? There have been a number of discussions there about cotinus. Here is a link to one that I remembered:

You have to register to see the images.

Good luck with this one, looks like a great trunk.

Yes thank you. I read the above mentioned thread after I identified the tree outside my Studio and did a search for its use as bonsai. I was just wondering if anyone had any specific words about its care and growing habits etc.

Thanks
