Correct @pweifan, Anderson Flats from Stuewe.Brian, are those black tubs from Menards in the drainage section?
In 2015 I dug it up and put it in an Anderson Flat:

And let it grow basically wild for the next 2 years. It got to about 8' tall:

And after a good haircut:

It's back to 10" tall, and sporting a 4" base. Check back in another 2 years!
Are those the AFLAT5 model?
We moved in July ‘15, so I dug it up a few months earlier in March, and planted it in the Anderson flat. We don’t really have a great place to grow anything out in the ground in this yard, so I let the roots escape into the ground. The result isn’t much slower ground-growing and has the benefit of keeping some roots in close to the trunk. Why did you move it to a grow box to let it grow wild (instead of keeping it in the ground for those two years?

Probably, just nowhere to really “hide it” from view. I have Shimpakus tucked in and around the display posts in the ground, and a few others in the ground toward the fence, but I haven’t been too keen on starting a bunch more material over the last few years. It’s challenging just keeping what I have in good shape right now!Bri, would a raised grow out area be an option for you?
And it will do for a while/ Then will come the mid-life crisisI haven’t been too keen on starting a bunch more material over the last few years. It’s challenging just keeping what I have in good shape right now!
How does 6’ translate to enitial trunk size vs optimal long term vs this present time of year in tandem?Hard cutback today. The apex had grown 6’ in just a couple months.
