I’ve never really made a habit of removing flowers when they faded and they have always just fallen off or fruits quickly got snagged by animals or just dropped without developing. I had a dawn variety that was fenced off that one fruit made it and I was actually able to grow it.
The Beni chidori below has tons of fruit that I will let see what happens. Does anybody know if the seed will grow and produce the same color flowers? I suspect it make takes years to flower but am curious if how that works. Thanks!

It will depend on the source of the pollen it received.
There are hundreds (close to 1000) of Prunus mume cultivars, the majority of which are produced by deliberately/accidentally cross-pollination and producing seed. Some bonsai professionals and people in this forum have said that they "revert back to yabai", which is in fact not the most likely outcome.
The earliest I have heard flowers emerging from seedlings is 3 years old, but this was described to me as an exception. 5-7 years is more common, based on what I was told (again, by multi-generational Prunus mume specialists). None of my own seedlings have flowered yet (planted in Winter 2021 going into Spring 2022).
Thank you and Good to know. Other varieties in the yard are dawn and Omoi no mama and another Beni chidori. Guess we shall see if the fruit makes it and go from there!
