Hi All.

I have root aphids in some of my pines.
I got a recommendation on a forum to use a diluted mix of protector c bug killer.

Has anyone any experience using this to tackle a root aphid problem?

Thanks

Do you see aphids listed on the label? Because I don't.
Use something that lists aphids on the label.

Can you recommend something available in Europe? I can't find anything that's why I reached out to a forum for recommendations

Sure! I searched amazon UK with shipping to Ireland for you:

It's a systemic and lists aphids on the label. Systemics wouldn't be needed as root aphids are very sensitive to contact-acting stuff like pyrethrins. But the stuff I linked to should work as well. A single treatment should be enough.

Here's another, this one is about the least harmful to other life, that's still effective against root aphids.
Least harmful is not harmless! It can kill cats and reptiles specifically, too. But all things considered, it has the shortest time to break down (of available insecticides that are effective) and it doesn't make your plant toxic for a while like a systemic would.

Protector C seems to be made as residual household spray. No mention of using it on plants. The ingredients don't appear to be harmful to plants but I'd still be cautious.

Root aphids are difficult to control because they are hiding below ground. Most aphid treatments are contact insecticide applied to the leaves which will not affect insects in the soil.
Systemics are effective but probably not available in Ireland.
I found a couple of references to Hydrogen peroxide to treat root aphids. I have not used it for root aphids but it works great against fungus gnats in potting soil and it's extremely safe.

Thanks. I have provanto. This is a contact spray and fine for foliage. Will this work for root aphids if I can't get to them directly? I'm not planning on repotting these again.

Thanks Shibui. This is exactly my issue. I need a drench to get into the soil.
I think ill try a 1:3 mix of protector c to water and see how it works on one tree first.

Yes, it will work. Spray the soil and then water with tap water thoroughy in a bucket so the soil is submerged. That should be sufficient to drench and kill them.
I've done it twice like that and it worked all of the times.
