Just a follow up. It’s been less than 2 weeks since I seriously cut back the port and there is a ton of new growth (the light green leaves).

Awwww. I have weird stuff going on in my yard too. Some things are still dormant, and an apple flowered this week when I wasn't looking so I missed it. My phone wont take photos but I do have a clumsy big tablet I have to get comfortable with if I want to share photos!
