Picea Glauca Yamadori test tree.

@Saddler What kind of soil did you plant it in when you collected it? Regular bonsai soil, or pumice, or something else? I'm looking to collect some white spruce from a friends property on the coast. They seem pretty hardy and grow in a wide variety of soils.

It’s in a mix of 1 bag Canadian Tire Qualisorb, one bag of Gardenworks Pumice and a half bag of Sea Soil.

It’s doing well, I think. Not much has happened other then pushing a whole lot of new buds with only a few opening this year. I hear that is normal for an old tree. I feel next year is the year it starts growing. And by feel I mean, I just really hope so.

One thing I did do is preserve the dead wood with cyanoacrylate. 2oz are in there now. It seems to be doing a decent job.

This deadwood is just outstanding:cool:! One comment: two dead side trunks seem at odds with all downsloping branches on dead trunk:confused:.

Oh yea. I agree. But I also disagree. I kind of have an idea to incorporate all three dead trunks, but I get what you are saying. For now I am just waiting for it to start pushing new growth and the styling is just something I ponder until then. I suspect the branch on the left is going to die, so I am not investing that much energy into its future until it shows me it has some vigour and I see what is what.

Completely understood. High hopes for your tree. Personally just did first ever major prune and installed 3 wires on Bristlecone after debating with self and vacillating at least 3 years to do anything. Very satisfying to be done at last;).

I am very anxious to start working on it, but not nearly as anxious as I am about setting it back again. At least every year I wait, my options become a little more clear. Mostly with @Walter Pall picture progressions showing me appropriate branch lengths and tree dimensions. I do hope he posts more new spruce to study.

My spruce is finally looking like it has started to recover. Being the third spring I’ve had it, it is the first time it has started to push buds this early and they look significantly better already then any buds the last two years. I think it’s going to be a bud explosion this year, fingers crossed.

This old spruce seems to be finally taking off. The branch coming off on the left in the first pic doesn’t know yet if it wants to live. So far only two weak buds are extending on that branch.

Depending on how long the buds end up extending and the number of new buds, I might try and wire a few small branches this fall. But I will err on the side of caution. Or I’ll sell it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Unfortunately we have a pesky boarder between us.
Well, if you cannot sell it to hemi, sell it to me!

Glorious moment when they start pushing like that and you know, this one made it to the other side. Congrats!
