Paul's Scarlet Air Layering - Callus but no roots

Thanks @Deep Sea Diver . The photos I included in the comment I took on the 22nd June. Not certain if that was when I also took the cuttings... my bad for not recording that information.
I was thinking of removing the cloches (domes) but I've decided to leave covered for some winter protection. The UK weather is all over the place at the moment with temperatures up and down like a fiddler's elbow! When we get some hard frosts forecast I'll cover with some frost fleece protection.

Well... here we are about 4 months since I last posted on this about my attempts with propagating Paul's Scarlet Hawthorn.

The update is that 5 of the cuttings made roots. Of the remaining 20, 15 have callousing and 5 nothing... BUT all have budded out and have leaves. I've now potted up the ones with roots into small pots and put the others back inthe bigger plant pot/cloche covered...

I also took cuttings of my Japanese Hawthorn (Cratageus cuneata). Hese are also budded and opening leaves but, on checking, none had roots - only callousing. Potted back up and under the cloche cover.

Good first effort! You should try again😉

Honestly, we never pull these out of the media to check. Just wait. When a cutting begins to extend for a couple months one knows the roots are out and functioning. As long as the cuttings have green we just leave the cuttings in media.

Think you were late in the year for best success. We will be taking cuttings o/a June or July as the branchlets extend and harden off. Once this happens it’s time to stick them.

Cheers

Thanks @Deep Sea Diver ... appreciate your encouragement 🙂. I'll be trying again this year as the donator tree has a lot more buds opening so I should have a lot more to select from. Last year many of the buds on the long branches didn't open at all. I put this down to the lack of roots when I received the bare root tree. I repotted the tree in a bigger container and was expecting more roots to have developed in the last year than it had. More finer feeder roots so going forward should be OK.

Because the cuttings where close together and opening buds - as in the photos - I had concerns that their young roots would become entangled... previous cuttings of other trees (Zelcova serrata for example) rooted extremely well and I was expecting similar with these Paul's Scarlet. I'm now aware to wait longer - and give more room for the cuttings.

I tried a number of cuttings taken over a period of time... these on the 21st June and potted 22nd June. I'll try to do the same this year - a number of cuttings at different times - into July and possibly August. I may even attempt to airlayer some of the thick branches - I've 5 to use as I need to reduce the height if I'm going to bonsai this.
