Well, it's official. April 26th I have signed up to have a styling day with Owen Reich. He's coming to Meehan's Miniatures and having demos and the sorts that weekend, so I've signed up to bring in one of my monster Ficus.

A couple weeks before that though, the Northern Virginia Bonsai Society is having Roy Nagatoshi come and style some of the member's trees. Hopefully (if I get a spot) I'll bring my other monster Ficus for him to work on with me. But, I haven't yet secured a spot for that, so cross your fingers for me! Two great opportunities in one month!

Hell yeah Ryan!

Owen is great to work with. Hes really down to earth and obviously knowledgeable from his apprenticeship.

Do you have any conifers or deciduous trees? No offence, but seems like a waste of a chance to work with Owen. I mean, you can pretty much whack the crap outta' a fig and it'll come back. None the less, enjoy!;)

Yeah, we're getting Owen in Richmond on his way up North. Really excited to meet the chap having seen all his vids. My club is excellent about bringing big names. Only a few more American bonsai "masters" that I've yet to shake hands with.

Take some pics will ya?

Well, I'm just a fig man, so all I've got are Ficus. The reason I'm bringing one of my 10 inch trunk Ficus is because Martha has a huge natalensis that I purchased at one point. Owen styled it for her last year, and I have absolutely NO idea where to take the monster, so I'll see what he has to say.

I went to a Roy workshop and wasn't all that impressed. If you are coming in for shimpaku grafting, I think it is well worthwhile. Other than that, I didnt feel like I got my money's worth compared to other instructors that held workshops for NVBS.

Well I'm just planning on signing up for a styling workshop with Roy where he helps style one of your own trees, so hopefully I'll be able to do so.

I'm glad to hear you didn't bale on bonsai. I was worried there for a while. :)

Well I was considering it, but I think it was just the winter time sadness. Gets me every year.

Will there be material for sale at the workshops? I would consider buying some at one of them and bringing the ficus to the other. Owen gave a presentation for my club last year and he was very knowledgable. I would trust him to take something forward.

I'm sure there will be, they're both at nurseries. However, I've got two massive Ficus that don't yet have a direction, so Roy gets to style one and Owen gets the other :)

I misread your earlier post. I thought your want you'd take a ficus to work on, then two weeks later to the other workshop for more work. Make sure to post pics of both. If I recall correctly you got one off those monsters from Fred (?) on Facebook.

Yup, they're from Fred. They're just so big that I have NO idea how to work them.

I haven't touched the one I got from him either. I don't believe it has lost anymore than a half dozen leaves since the day it arrived. And, I had to repot it when it arrived because the pot was in pieces.

I took a similar workshop a few years ago. He comes every April to NVBS. He didn't really do much help styling people's trees - not just mine, but other people as well. Maybe it was an off day for him, but he spent a half hour or more grafting shimpaku foliage to some guy's san jose juniper, and spent a lot of the rest of the 3 hours sitting and chatting with people. I felt like I wasted my money and time to be honest.

I wonder. This is supposed to be JUST a styling class, and he's supposed to meet with each student for roughly 30 minutes each.
