never ceases to amaze me

It is so funny the co2 levels can actually be inside a small home with 3 people

Add a very small fan and these germination environments are not that bad.Was probably spiked a bit since I was standing in the room ,as humans exhale 38000 ppm in every breath………..If I don’t have a door open in the grow room I can actually spike it near 3000 PM just by working vigorously …… leaves will start burning in just a couple hours at this level.

this looks ok …..humidity is perfect for seedlings……could be a few degrees warmer ……

What a horticultural rabbit-hole this thread has been. I will have to check out those grodan cubes for seed starting JM's. Do you ever have to worry about damping off?

I like the ebb and flow system as well. Will eventually make my own flood tray system.

Zelkova seem to be stretching in the red spectrum lights/ and some air-layered Chaenomeles

Seems the Zelkova will stretch like this.I am ready to get them outside before the season ends,but there is still much time for a zelkova to grow.

Here I have a few Japanese Quince seedling air-layers.They layer and root extremely vigorously.

Been about 3 wks for the root starting phase for Siberian Elm!!

Ok we had a few days of rain here and it just seems to make roots push and push.
The extra mono ammonium phosphate has definately boosted rooting on these very young trees.MORE ROOTS MORE BIO-STIMULANTS INTO THE TINY PLANT FROM THE START.

All about that…makes a very huge and noticeable difference in growth habit and vitality when roots are grown first!!!

So I am going to leave these on a balanced motherplant nutrient so they root quickly when I may notch them here and there when preparing Raft Style seedling starters……..I will simply direct them over to another stonewool block,notch the bark,and set into the 2nd stonewool cube.Can just tie the cubes together with thin wire or twine as one unit……will look like asymetrical lego creations snapped together at various combinations

I am not rushing these and using the time to study slower growing ,high brix and stronger rooting effects that is the result of a little patience and tech put together………let leaves and roots supply the energy( or perhaps have a surplus)= a strong plant.

EXCELLENT ROOTING ON A SEEDLING WITH ONLY 3 NODES YET!!!!!

Slow grow method on Field Maple!!!!!



Check these!
About to push root nubs down the stem.
I believe this is a product of photosynthesis directed to make energy and natural rooting hormones.Not wasting all energy from leaves just to assimilate nitrates.

These have been on the starter nutrient motherblend also for a few weeks like the elms.

Can see root nubs along the stem…..if I girdled the bark these would root in days…like less than a week probably.
Also dig the 1/4” Field Maple internodes……would like to keep that going…( lots of kelp foliar feeding).

Now…find some good seed of Field Maple as I had an extremely poor germination rate.

More and different batches are in the storage fridge at colder temps too just above freezing for cold stratification.

These are sprouted and grown in absolute full sun!!!! Why I admire them so.

Can’t believe these are not all gone.They have actually grown since posting on ebay almost a mnth ago.

I am keeping stuff for sure to enjoy the hobby.

Roots really grow when there is a day or two of rain.Look at the roots on the 2” mini cube.

The big ones are sold out,but I have about 36 of the 3 trunk $10 ones……I like them.I like the one below as I am keeping it because of the branching on the taller tree…..I kept all the ones that were twin trunk as one of the seedling cuttings parished for one reason or another.

Going to keep the Korean Hornbeam mini forests.
These have been a test for using the Grodan Grow Wool……everything seems fine.The Hornbeams look fine.The stuff is way more aerated than one would think.

interesting zelkova seedling

It is interesting when sewing alot of seed the variety that can come about.When you see something unusual, the only way to know if a new trait ……is to keep it identified from the others and observe its growth.

This looks like som kind of Boabab Zelkova tree seedling or something,but the very thick stem is quite interesting and exciting……could have extra vascular health or could be adept to have a thick trunk( which is usually a better vascular system in a sprout anyways).
Its cool looking.Out of about 300 germinating seeds.

AMUR MAPLE SEEMS INTERESTING



Just bought .25 lb of seed.Perhaps start early indoors and then bring outside in Spring.

The white orchid spahgnum .
Do an 24 hr water soak with a bit of kelp powder.
30 days warm in a ziplock bag of the orchid spahgnum( as it is a sterile antibiotic media so minimal mold).Then put the ziplock bag in the fridge 90-180 days.

So I have deduced these take longer and I will try the 4-6 mnth at a slightly colder temp as they in my storage fridge around 34 F.

Not too much water they seem to rot some in the bag……squeeze all but a drip of water out of bag.

we’ll get it.They are nice trees.I currently have fw schumacher and also sheffields lots of seed….sheffields from hungary and seed looks consideralbly drier then schumacher,so we’ll see.

That's what I plan on doing, going to experiment leaving some in the fridge the full 6 months, taking some outside earlier in winter for some temperature fluctuations, maybe even take some out of the fridge for a few hours every week. I got plenty from F W Schumacher so we'll see what works best. Also I will experiment with putting some in the greenhouse, and some just on the bench. What was your germination rate roughly?

Maybe a late summer and outdoor ground stratification……..I here they can wait till 2nd season.
My seed looked rotted after strat so maybe not the best………the batch in the fridge now had some plump ones lookin’ ready to pop.

I bet a longer cold strat in colder fridge temps approaching 33-34f

KEEPIN’ SOME FOR ME


So the rejects that were missing a tree or odd numbers I am keeping myself.
Went big on these and upped them to a 4” Stonewool Block.
These may stay for a couple years……..The blocks have the propensity to supply alot of nutrients in a confined space since the air-pruning.I seen 8’ pepper plants in 6” Stonewool blocks!!!!!

I like these……the double trunk ones in 1.5” mini blocks are fine for now as best to let them air-prune abundantly before upping.

These had very nice roots……..and were borderline able to survive a full day of sun from the water transpiration process…..they got quite dry a couple times…..nice to see it did not phase them.
These are currently 1.1 EC OF nutrient strength…….as high as I ever go in a tree.If was a vegetable the higher NPK would get the oils and terpines going and make fruit sweeter as the high salt content actually water stresses the plant a bit since highly concentrated…………I prefer to use lots of chelating bio-stimulants to save at least 20% less NPK SALTS……..less salt=more water= more drought resistant plant!!!
And more ion uptake through transpiration process……….plus select microbes will actully utilize root exudates and make amino acid type NPK right at the roots and save the leaves to save photosynthestic energy…….and achieve a surplus of natural plant process energy…high brix!!!!!
I have to get my own garden going……I so miss the whole hobby of outdoor seasonal growing.
Maybe a little nudge indoors

What stonewool? It just dissapears and turnes into roots and wood
It is made of stone and NEVER decomposes.

I love this stuff.
Straight up ready to grow a bonsai in this stuff.Or a mixture anyways.

Did a couple small Field Maple air -layers

I mixed the talc based hormone with a gel……should root in days……..will just insta-pot these little specimens and grow very slowly and keep everything very tight.Already nice and tight……7 internodes in a 4” shoot.Will be nice to have this as a air-layered base…….seems to want to branch equally all over……..kelp foliar feeding working for sure.

Comes out to a little over 4-5 cents per 1x1.5inch cube, including shipping to my state. Have to factor in the labor of cutting it yourself, and also it wont come with that nifty outer layer that keeps the roots from growing into adjacent cubes.
