Went and pruned as advised allow and wired a bit to orient main branch directions. Did I remove too much?

Is this tree still considered in development stage ? Do I keep fertilizing heavy or start decreasing fertilizer ?
Thanks
Very much “in development”. You have no real branches.

compare your tree to these:

Quick question, do you cut back when branch is this long or let it run more and then cut back ? Cut back to 2 leaves on branch to build taper ?

Well, I would let it get substantially bigger than it is now. Maybe not to the point that it’s as big as I want because when you cut back, you’ll let it grow again, and the base will certainly continue to thicken. And you’ll do this dozens of times!

take a look at this field of JBPs:

Those sacrifice branches are 15 feet tall! And yet, when they’re cut back, there will be a “next section” that needs to grow out. And the next. And the next...

There is a trade-off. Letting the sacrifice grow really big before chopping produces a big scar to heal. Chopping more frequently produces smaller scars that heal over quicker and more cleanly,at the expense of slower girth development. You have to make that judgement call if how long to let it go before chopping.

one thing I can tell you: a bigger pot will speed the growth. It’s VERY difficult/slow to build girth in a small bonsai pot.

Thanks for the replies. Weirdly with olives I see a crazy fast growth even in bonsai pot when I fertilize, then again am sure would have been even better in soil or larger pot.... can u share how many years it took for your trees to get these branches ?
