Newbies - want to share your trees?

I have no idea what I’m doing … but they are alive still. Just need to figure out some sort of style now…

Summer 2021 I got one tree (double trunk boxwood in a brown pot) and was intending on getting maybe a larch this spring. Too much work with bonsai trees, I thought.
This is July 2021...
This isn't even all of it. There are trees in the ground and in recovery pots.
*the jades were house plants but got chopped this year and I'll try to train them as bonsai

Progress on one of my jacarandas. Seems that people don't like these as bonsai, so I don't find a lot of info on them, so I've just been experimenting on my own pretty much entirely. It seems that chopping and defoliating the crap out of them works. I get some back buds when I do an aggressive chop, that low branch wasn't there last year.

Hello everyone,

My first post on this forum, where i have learned quite a few new useful things. I'm from Belgium and got infected by the bonsai virus a year ago. There is no vaccine yet. So far I have been most successful at killing trees but here are a few that have survived.
- Lonicera
- Deshojo
- Serissa
- Azalea
- ulmus
- acer buergerianum
- ficus (kind unknown to me)

I have several other ones, but they are a) in full ground or b ) too tiny to mention

I received my first Bonsai as a gift last summer - a Chinese Elm with bad instructions and horrible soil. I found Bonsai Nut this year and have been lurking, learning, and getting into the hobby. My elm managed to survive its mistreatment long enough for me to learn to repot it into better soil and move it outside; it is now recovering and has several new plants to keep it company (but no real bonsai yet).

Here is my current "collection", though it is a bit tough to see against the greenery in the background.

Here is what the elm looks like at the moment. It looks pretty crazy because I'm leaving it alone to recover from its mistreatment. It may not be good, but it IS special because it is the tree that got me started. :)

Next is a Harlandii Boxwood. I put this together in a Bonsai 101 class at Plant City Bonsai. It is in an oversized pot because 1) I took the class in June and did not want to go nuts on the roots and 2) I would like to see it grow more. I may take it out of the pot and give it more time to grow...not really sure yet.

Last is a Maple that I also put together at PCB because I had some extra time (the class members doing junipers took much longer than the boxwoods). The soil is mounded because I didn't want to touch the roots in June. I'll probably put this one in a large grow bag next spring to let it get bigger before putting it back in the pot in a few years, but it has had enough trauma for this year.

Other than that, I have some kusamono that I will put in the appropriate thread and several projects that might be something some day - probably not something good, but I'm having fun with it! This site has been a HUGE help to get me started and I look forward to hanging out with you all for years to come.

Well alrighty now! Welcome Aboard BNut!

It good to see all the new folks coming onboard. Being a lurker, you’ve likely already read @Bonsai Nut ’d thread on How to be a successful beginner. If not, here it is - have fun perusing it. It’s a good read.

Otherwise you have already followed one of the major pieces of advice. Get help.

Being from the Peach State you likely already know of another really resource in your area, the Atlanta Bonsai Society. In fact it looks like one of our really experienced members @Adair gave a presentation there recently, I think 😉 So a great bunch of folks to meet. Its one of the big things that helped me at first , joining a club.

I’ll look forward to seeing your future posts.

btw @Pitoon, @HorseloverFat and @sorce et al are bound to be near!

cheers

Thanks, @Deep Sea Diver! I have already joined the Atlanta Bonsai Society and attended a great kusamono workshop last month. I'm looking forward to the club auction later this month and hope to add something to my collection! :)
