Newbie with a flowering cherry

Hey guys, i was recently in Japantown in San Francisco and passed by a bonsai store. They had a lot of pretty things in pots, but i ran into this little tree that seemed neglected. I felt sorry for it so i decided to purchase the little guy. It was under a sign that said pre-bonsai.

My question is, where should i start with it? I'm in no hurry to do anything, and if leaving it be and letting it grow is an option, I'm all for it. BTW the tag it came with says "Prunus, Holly Jolivette, flowering cherry". All recommendations are welcome. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the inspiration! I guess my next plan would be to grow the trunk by planting it into the ground. Should I be waiting for spring time to do so, and is it safe to go straight into the ground with its little size? Or maybe I can put it in a bigger pot and let it grow in there before putting it into the ground... sorry, i promise I'm doing myresearch as we speak

It can go straight into the ground, ideally in a spot where it will get lots of light and not stepped on.
