Ok so since I started bonsai, I have always loved the blue Jacaranda mimisifolia because of its flowers, aswell as wisteria. I do have a wisteria in training but I know that both of these trees are not great for bonsai technique plus I heard that jacaranda does not flower in pots.

I do have a bougainvillea and when it flowers its gorgeous!

I have always loved flowers on bonsai, so I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a species that may flower and give me that bright purple flowers that I am craving while still allowing for some bonsai technique. I have a great grow light setup for tropicals as well so tropicals arent an issue.

Lavender star flower is a kind of purple. @ABCarve has a really sweet one, I have a stick in a pot one.

These are the flowers & it blooms non-stop. :) But the flowers only last 48hrs or less. I got this one from Wigerts.

Lilac is an option. Upside is you can beat it with about as much work you feel like in a given year, the downside is, you need to slash it back religiously in order to maintain a bonsai profile once its established.

Vietnamese Blue Bell but mine hasn't bloomed yet.
Good call. I have one of those and I forgot to mention it. And the flowers smell like grape soda. :) It's been flowering all summer for me, weird it's not for you. It loves sun, water and fert. Age maybe?

There are two varieties of plectranthus one more purple than the other. The real purple one isn’t so good for bonsai. Take a look.

Dwarf powderpuff...bloom all year round. I'm not a huge flowering tree person. That said, the flower buds look like berries...which is charming as heck.

Then the bloom is out of this world special. Quite exotic and special.

I agree, if you like tropicals and flowers, i think theres nothing that compares to this, and they are pretty bullet proof.

tabebuia or purple crape too :)
I do like that Tabebuia!
Hibiscus or cherry trees?
I have been trying to find some decent cherry nursery stock, I do love their flowers!

Interesting! I know the brazilian rain tree and the brazilian fire bush are similar to this type of flower (I have both) but interesting that it blooms all year round, I will have to keep my eye out for all of these!

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, now its just the hard part of finding the species here in canada 🥲

Anybody try the desert sumac that kinda looks like poison oak? Its used a lot in drought tolerant landscaping.
