New from Salt Lake

I learned a lot from @Eric Schrader he owns bonsaify and post on this site also. Here are some of his YouTube videos about it.

I made the mistake of using peat my first year. Its biggest problem is if it dries out it won’t absorb water again so it’s really bad. Using coco coir is much better. They sell it at Home Depot ect. The perlite from box stores is mostly fine dust so only a fraction of each bag is usable so ordering larger sized (1/4” or so) online is my plan for next year. The perlite coco is a good option for growing out, but once you put trees into bonsai pots (that are much smaller than grow out containers) you will want to use a more efficient mix such as “boons mix” https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/boons-mix.30187/
Since we are in the desert adding more coco will keep trees from dying out when in development maybe like 30% and 70% perlite. This will be my second year using Eric’s mix so I’m still learning about the ratio too. Once trees are in their bonsai pots the akadama acts like the coco for the boon mix. Hopefully that made sense.
This is great info. Since all of my trees are currently in development the perlite/coco mix is exactly what I was wondering about. Will repot them with this mix in the spring. Thank you!

Hello, @Arbol
Thanks for the thread! I've been lurking around for Utah specific info, because I over think everything. Probably a benefit for this new hobby of mine. 😉 I'm new to this site and brand new to bonsai. I'm up in Layton, UT.
And thank you to everyone that shared good info about Utah bonsai. I'm planning on going to my first bonsai club of Utah meeting this Wednesday. Hopefully, I'll get to meet some of you! 😊 I'll be the big guy with a shaved head and glasses looking very intimidated 😂

Utah transplant here, does anyone know if there are any bonsai shops around Ogden? I think I've found 3 but they are all down in salt lake area
I haven't gone north yet on my recent nursery tours. 😂 I don't think there's any real "bonsai" nursery in Utah. (Gimme a few years😉) But J & J Nursery here in Layton is a cool nursery generally. Haven't seen it except in winter though. Not too much bonsai stuff, generally, but I think they'll have good pre-bonsai material here shortly.

See my current preference on nursery is the valley nursery in uinta area, pretty much any variety of trees you could want there even if they don't have bonsai material,

Might just start a bonsai nursery myself here soon at this rate lmao

Which nurseries are you referring to?
Wasn't necessary saying nurseries necessarily, but there's cactus and tropical (which I learned about here) there's bonsai bai me (two locations between Lehi and Springville) then there's Paradise palm indoor garden center which has reviews mentioning bonsai.

Again I haven't been able to check these places as they're a little far for me, maybe you all can check them out and let the thread know if any of them are worth a (approximately) 40 dollar trip

Cactus and Tropicals is the only place I’ve been to. bonsai bai me Is a like a date night place as far as I have seen, so you pay and “make a bonsai” but they don’t really sell supplies or raw material.

I think you are best off just buying stuff online that has been grown to be bonsai, and I haven’t seen any local stuff that has been grown with bonsai in mind.

Paradise Palm has very little as far as bonsai. However, it is a really cool shop. It's very much a small indoor jungle in downtown SLC. I'd recommend a stop, but just added to a trip that you're already on down here. They do have a couple big REALLY old ficus bonsai that are just so cool.

Yeah unfortunately I haven’t found anything nursery-wise really worth the money for pre bonsai. I’ve been getting most of my trees online at evergreengardenworks.com. Have bought from Meehan’s Miniatures and from Brussels.
